Awaiting your report Adrian………………
May 14, 2008 at 03:28 #163317Takeover Target would take some beating in the KrisFlyer. That is simply an easy kill to earn some more money for the taxi driver.

May 14, 2008 at 09:40 #163358KT – it’s been lovely since I arrived on Monday but this morning after the Europeans did track work it has not stopped with a torrential downpour which has lasted until tea time. It’ll be a great test of the new StrathAyr turf course if it can return to something like good for raceday – anecdotal evidence suggests that it might.
The Herman Brown pair of Jay Peg (Anton Marcus) and Mourilyan (Weichong Marwing) did a niece piece on the Polytrack this morning – he’s trying to put more speed into the latter and his confirmation is changing as a result.
On form Jay Peg is certainly the one to beat.
Balius worked on the turf before it rained and if he can continue his HK form he’d be a big threat.
I like Traffic Guard e/w at a big price as he is sounder now that he has been Jane has conditioned him specifically with this race in mind – he also has tactical speed in a race where they will be loads of pace from the locals as well as Jay Peg.
In the Sprint I’m tending to agree with Myles about Takeover Target as long as the ground dries up and he handles going left handed OK. He and Magnus don’t arrive until Wednesday evening so not had a chance to share a beer with Joe Janiak but looking forward to doing so.
Absolute Champion would be a threat on form and he doesn’t mind an off track apparently. He got in this morning and I’ve not seen him yet either.
Hard to fancy Lovelace although he looks well and the Dubai horses are probably out of their depth here although if Star Crowned can transfer his excellent 3rd in the Golden Shaheen to turf then he’d be in contention.
What does Myles think about Universal Ruler. Suprised he thinks this will be a penalty kick for TT with this useful West Coast 3yo raider in the race.
PS KT – Craig and the cub settling in well – Duck on cruise control!
May 14, 2008 at 09:45 #163359You mean Duck isn’t missing me?

The track will be fine if you get a day of sunshine, it recovers brilliantly.
I see they tried blinkers on Why Be in his trial – they should have kept them till race day he’d have been unbeatable! Also Absolute Champion kicked out in the float I hear?? Is he OK?
Glad you’re having fun, enjoy it all!
May 14, 2008 at 09:55 #163360Yes he’s got some cuts apparently but vets don’t seem to think it is too serious.
I’ll know more after morning exercise tomorrow.
The jetlag is getting to me – having to wake up at 3.30am for track work which is 10.30pm at home is exhausting!
Still off with Soong for a few Tigers tonight to pick me up.
You are being missed hugely!! I just think that the cub has settled in well and Duck sent him off in the rain to do all the locals today!
May 14, 2008 at 09:58 #163361Oh bless him, he’s a good worker!
Enjoy the Tigers and tell Soong he may get a call for a reference from the Guardian !!May 14, 2008 at 10:09 #163363Universal Ruler is an unknown quantity and form on the West Coast rarely adds up to what the East provides. Northerly aside.
Takeover Target proved in the T.J. Smith Stakes that he is not what he used to be. It is also interesting to note that his major Group 1 victories have all been right-handed. When in Melbourne, he has won them on the straight course. Oops.
Hmm – what else for the KrisFlyer, Adrian?
May 14, 2008 at 23:48 #163524Magnus and Takeover Target both arrived safely and trotted a lap before hack cantering a lap this morning.
TT looks really well – if a little dull in his coat – and I wouldn’t worry about the TJ Smith as that was very much a prep for this and even this is only part of the long term plan to go back to Royal Ascot.
I can’t get a grip on the locals. Laurie Laxon’s Waikato seems best on form having won a handicap on 4th May pretty easily. He has won 8 of his 14 starts and looks useful but how can we currently compare him to TT, Absolute Champion and co.
Jay Peg worked round the bend today and looked well but perhaps the most visually impressive work was from kiwi galloper Sir Slick who powered home and the trainer thinks he’ll be much fitter than he was in HK. Graeme Nicholson really packs the work into this 6yo but he’d need to show at least the form of his wins in Awapuni Cup and NZ Stakes to get a blow in here. Mind you although he was last in the APQEII he was only 7 lengths behind Archipenko.
May 15, 2008 at 00:14 #163526My opinion is that Hong Kong margins are always deceiving.

Adrian (hope you enjoyed the Tigers!
), have you lost all hope in Why Be given his HK performance? I do think it was an extremely poor ride from a bad gate (sorry Noel but them’s the breaks) but he’s better than that and on his own turf he has to be in with a place chance do you think? Or am I being way too loyal?
May 16, 2008 at 07:08 #163802KT – Why Be seemed to be improved by blinkers out of the gate in his trial. Can’t see him myself but would be most emotional winner if he did.
Lim’s Fighter withdrawn from the Sprint as Meagher can’t race him after bout of bronchitis.
May 16, 2008 at 16:51 #163930Emotional is not the word, I shall cry buckets over here!
May 16, 2008 at 22:56 #163976A winning strike rate you could only dream of, that Why Be.
May 17, 2008 at 08:44 #164019Well said! He’s the sweetest little horse too (well not little as such but sort of blocky)
I kow it’s in the realms of dreams but I would so love to see him win.May 18, 2008 at 00:24 #164116Final words Adrian?
Would be too easy to rate Takeover Target on top and suggest him to be the suggested bet. But … he should win!
Not sold on anyone in the SAIC. Unless somebody has worked the house down this week.
May 18, 2008 at 05:31 #164121I’m going for Takeover Target and Jay Peg – not original I know but both have been trained long term for these races and have best form and condition.
Outsiders would be Traffic Guard in the SAIC (only at a huge price though) and in the Sprint Capablanca – although he may be too short if backed by the locals. I’ve watched his prep runs on video now and he looks useful. Can’t see him beating TT, Absolute Champion or Magnus but if one of these disappoints he could sneak third.
Brett Prebble late replacement on Balius.
