Quote: from graysonscolumn on 9:08 am on Jan. 29, 2007[br]Yep, Smithy, I’m given to believe the same.
There are other, more clear-cut mispronounciations about which I’ve always got more annoyed, such as the universal rendering of Seebald as "see bald" rather than the "zay-baldt" that his German origins should demand (see also "zum see" instead of "tzum zay" ).

Those ones bug me too Jeremy! I studied German and it’s a language I love, so I always have to grit my teeth when those are mispronounced.

A fellow Germanist, yay! I’ve always said I liked you, BH. I’m from a German family and did my first degree in the Muttersprache, before discovering the joys of librarianship and racing analysis, in that order.
Another one I thought of this afternoon: it’s "Zing-shpeel", not "Sing-spe-ell", Mr Francome! Grrrr.

The feeling’s mutual GC
How cool you’re from a German family! I only did the A level, but I always preferred it over French by a long way. It’s a beautiful language to speak and to listen to I think. Some wonderful sounds!
February 4, 2007 at 22:29 #37178Oh God I hated German – even though I’d been absolutely desperate to learn it for years as my Dad’s family come from the Black Forest.
I quite liked French to start with but soon disliked it – Spanish is a lovely language though and I am determined to learn it properly – eventually…..
Shame there are so few opportunities over there to say Hindernisrennen or Hurderennen. An increasingly thin territory jumps-wise….

February 5, 2007 at 05:40 #37181Getting off the racing subject a tad, are you a fan of Rammstein GC? I think they’re terrific! And they wouldn’t sound the same if they sang (and I use the term loosely) in any other language.
February 5, 2007 at 09:54 #37182Picking your brains, Jeremy. How do you pronouce Jagdrennen? I find myself having to say it surprisingly often now! Is it Jag-d-rennen, or Yarg-drennen, or what?
February 5, 2007 at 11:05 #37183I’m not Jeremy, but I do know my German and this is pronounced yakt-rennen.
February 5, 2007 at 11:36 #37184Thanks very much, always an answer on here. I should now make a joke about the races being competed in by yaks, but I won’t.
