It would appear Simon Claisse is being a tad optimistic about the weather in Cheltenham. It was cold night and the temperature didn’t rise until about midday. OK, things did melt before it got cold again about 1530.
Just popped outside and it was freezing on my car. OK, the covers may help — but tonight is much already colder than last night.
The covers can do their job, but I thought I ought to add a note of caution to the bullish statements coming out of Prestbury Park.
December 8, 2010 at 20:20 #331648Well played Cheltboy, any chance of up dates at your convenience?,i"d rather take your word than Simon "The Exaggerator" Claisse,he even looks like Terminator with his shades on! I would love to know how he will describe the going!
Cheers!December 8, 2010 at 20:25 #331650

Don’t forget it
feels
much colder than it actually is, cheltboy. The forecast for the next three days shows actual temperatures of no worse than -1 during daylight hours; I would expect Cheltenham to be able to deal with that.
December 8, 2010 at 20:44 #3316551.1 to lay on Betfair if you want to back your weather forecasting skills…
December 8, 2010 at 21:05 #331656I was at the track on Saturday and Monday and things looked a hundred times better on the first occasion. Thankfully that allowed the covers to go down and that should give plenty of frost protection, but the actual temperatures need to rise above what they are now – the area has been hit much harder than it was last week by frost and the field we keep our horses in is frozen to quite a depth. The X-Country is a goner, but hopefully the new course will be ok for Friday. Mr Claisse and his team deserve praise for getting racing on in January last year when most courses would have been in trouble. I’m hoping for more of the same.
December 8, 2010 at 21:09 #331657Met Office forecast for Cheltenham area:
Daytime Thursday max temp = plus 1 C
Nighttime Thurs/Fri min temp = minus 1 C
Daytime Friday max temp = plus 5 C
Nighttime Fri/Sat min temp = plus 3 C
Daytime Saturday max temp = plus 7 CIf those figures apply to Prestbury Park there has to be a good chance of both days racing taking place, especially after all the course covering done by the Cheltenham staff over the past week.
December 8, 2010 at 21:14 #331659I wasn’t saying it would not be on, but just sounding a note of caution to the met office forecasts and what Cheltenham are saying.

Taking those figures in isolation, it would seem that prospects are good, but covers normally only protect down to around -04 and, as Rory indicates, it’s probably been a piece colder on preceding nights.
Given that the air temperature needs to be double the amount the ground froze in the first place for the course to be raceable, I’d venture that SC is skating on pretty thin ice – for Friday, at least.December 9, 2010 at 09:31 #331699Minus three here at 0830 after a cold night.
Sat should be Ok if forecasts are right. Friday not so sure — but the sun is shining here now.December 9, 2010 at 09:50 #331701Cheers Cheltboy, have you had any significant Snow? because there"s No chance of racing up here,we still have a foot of snow in our back garden! Cheers.
December 9, 2010 at 09:51 #331702Is there a veneer of snow on the covers?
If so, that should have helped prevent too much frost getting in the ground
I’ve little doubt Doncaster’s turf is nearly frost-free under the deep blanket of snow they’ve got. Problem being there isn’t sufficient time for it to melt and reveal a raceable if uninviting surface

I’m 10 miles from Cheltenham.
10.30 a.m.
Sun is shining and patches of blue sky between the clouds. Temperature is 0 to 1 degrees and rising very slowly.
I’m no expert on covers but if the (local) weather forecast is as accurate and reliable as it has been then both days racing should be fine with the possible exception of the Cross Country on Friday.
Fingers crossed and really looking forward to Saturday’s card.
P.S. I’m with "The Ante Post King" on Calgary Bay EW (1/4 first 4) @ 33’s. 16’s in places now. 10 stone 6 pounds!
