If there should be all women short lists for parliamentary candidates and board members in the work place etc. Why don’t we get the same call for all women short lists to ensure women do more of the dirtiest, health destroying, manual jobs?
I’m just in favour of the best person for the job, whatever sex they are. Women and men should have equal rights. This will come eventually, but not if we get "positive" discrimination. Was it Ruth Lee who said that women who have given up work to have children, should not expect to get as far up the ladder in work, as a similar woman who has made the sacrifice of no children. Same goes for if a man took time out.
As far as children are concerned, I do believe the best option is for one parent to stay at home and look after the kids. But think more men should do that job. And if they do, in a divorce, the man should in most cases get custody. Custody battles are another place where women are greatly favoured.
It seems wherever it can be pointed out the percentages suggest women are predjudiced against, something is done. But it is somehow not the done thing for men to complain when it is the other way around.
Just because things are not split 50 / 50 does NOT mean there is any discrimination.
