Saying that european horses can’t be considered great because they didn’t run 20 times makes about as much sense as saying American horses can’t be great because they never won going right handed or won on an up hill finish.
The cultural and historical dynamics of each code of racing means greatness is measured differently in different places. The likes of Kelso or Forego could never have been great in Europe, at least not on the flat below 2m, as they would have been ineligible to run for some of the biggest prizes.December 21, 2009 at 21:41 #264854Secretariat – let der be no doubt on this pls
My A*se he would,i could just imagine him coming down the hill at Epsom! SECRETARIAT is an anagram of C,a rite tARSE!!

Also an anagram for Races Rate It which makes more sense than that half baked effort

If Secretariat had been trained at this side of the Atlantic by someone like Henry Cecil or AOB, if he was around then, he would have cleaned up. Just because he didn’t run round Epsom doesn’t mean he couldn’t have and I’m damn sure our trainers are as good as theirs.
A thing that makes me laugh is when I here people talking about young horses being by such and such a dirt horse so he should go well round Southwell or Wolverhampton…biggest crock in racing that one and so is this fallacy about American Horses not being able to perform round our courses. Many are bred in the USA but race here and if turf and hills is what they know then they will manage just fine.
If we can send grass horses to the States and win then I would think they could send dirt horses here and win their fare share as we do. Only reason they don’t is… why travel for less money?

You clever B*****d! Mind you it did take you 12 hrs exactly to the second to think of one!!
December 22, 2009 at 20:53 #264993Zarkava – Already being knocked, unfairly imho. She was a fantastic filly who gave G1 fields a start and a beating under hands and heels.
As much as I agree that on fair terms Sea the Stars was probably marginally the better, Zarkava was the best european filly of the decade imo. Yes, better than ouija board.
December 22, 2009 at 22:10 #265003I don’t really take too much notice of Timeform ratings

OK, many European champion racehorses aren’t as statistically impressive as the US horses regarding the number of times they ran. However, as far as pure performance is concerned, European horses are still equal. So, would Sea The Stars be in my Top 10? Yes, I think he would! This horse is close to perfection and he’d be granite-hard opposition for any horse that’s been mentioned in this thread. I believe he’d have claimed the scalp of Zenyatta if they’d have clashed.
The only slight gripe I have about Sea The Stars is that he didn’t possess the turn of foot that was jaw-droppingly spectacular like that of Dancing Brave. He had to quicken again to secure most of his wins … but that in itself is a sign of a true fighter.
