A good renewal of this race and is likely to be a stamina sapping event if the rain continues to fall (if still on of course).
2 stick out to me as being good bets at this stage:
MERIGO On the same mark as when 7th in a pipe opener at Carlisle recently which should put him spot on for this race. Has form on soft/heavy going and looks a dour stayer. Is also a progressive, improving sort in a race with lots of dead wood. Should go well whatever the price.
JAUNTY JOURNEY Another mud-lover and also on a good mark of 128, recently moved to the Twiston-Davies yard who are very adept at improving and getting the most out of new recruits. The only concern is that he is quite a young horse at 6 y/o to be tackling a gruelling event like this but is unexposed and should be one of the main protagonists.
December 1, 2009 at 22:53 #261638That’s Rhythm looks the class act to me, bit worried about the ground tho.
December 1, 2009 at 23:11 #261647^ No chance.

This could be a tough ask for Merigo with both Russian Trigger and Killbegan Blade more likely to go to Sandown on Saturday.
That’s Rythm is another unlikely runner due to the ground which could leave Merigo, who ran an absolute stinker at Cralisle, shouldering top weight. This trip will suit but it’s not like he was running on at the finish at Carlisle. He ran flat, jumped awful, was never in the hunt and the Eider may have left it’s mark on him. I would like to see a bit more to go on before investing in him.
Kate Walton’s Morgan Be appeals more having run a far better trial at Haydock. He’s slightly better in than he was at Newcastle and should reverse the form with Merigo in any case.
I’m not sure that Ferdy Murphy’s Poker De Sivola will get the trip but he is second to none when it comes to getting one ready for these marathons.
Rate of Knotts’s main target likely to be the Welsh National. Jonjo has several options but he could be really well in here getting 10lbs from Merigo and it would answer whether he would get the trip or not. Someone got stuck into him at Carlisle on his first run but unsurprisingly got their fingers burned He ran well until blowing up in the latter stages and will strip a lot fitter here if he turns up and Richie McLernon will most likely ride. If Jonjo does decide to run him he could start favourite so I’d think backing him early doors if it is confirmed would be recommended.
I hope Jonjo sends him elsewhere because:-
There will be a few "Teribus ye teri odin" war cries being heard around the borders as the very astute Alan MacTaggart prepares to keep the prize in Scotland. Unable to find a race for his Royal MacKintosh (a sure fine Scottish name) he decided to give him a run over hurdles at his fav course Carlisle.
He took it up 3 out which most would regard as too soon at Carlisle but all the way up the hill he never looked like being headed. He’s never won over this trip nor has he won anywhere else other than Carlisle but I doubt if that will matter here getting a massive 20lbs from Merigo.
Royal MacKintsh in the famous black and white colours will do for me.
December 2, 2009 at 14:19 #261789You left out Hoopy, Fist – is he running elsewhere?
Edit: Aah, I see – he’s running in half an hour, if Fairyhouse is on. (Just got home, I’ll check now.)
December 2, 2009 at 21:56 #261858Had a look at the entries for this race. Quite a decent contest in prospect and agree with the names mentioned such as Morgan Be and Royal Mackintosh. However the one that catches my eye is Bold Ransom. He ran a nice "trial" race behind Money Trix at Carlisle on his seasonal comback and might just have been laid out for this. Stable have won the race before and Bold Ransom has Course and Distance winning form from last year. The horse has lots of physical scope and could improve to be contender in this.
December 4, 2009 at 07:27 #262026ROYAL ROSA?
Will he ever take advantage of his ever decreasing mark?
Ran ok in the Becher and the yard are in pretty decent form at the minute.
Surely he will pop up in one of these eventually?
December 4, 2009 at 13:36 #262066I’m thinking the same re- Royal Rosa Ben but don’t think Sunday will be ‘it’. Jaunty Journey looks the most likely to be well handicapped, should he run. Didn’t jump too well last time mind and still very inexperienced.
Poker De Sivola next best for me. As Fist says Ferdy is adept at getting them ready for these marathons and teh horse has shown good ability on occasions.
December 4, 2009 at 13:50 #262072I’m a bit unsure where Poker de Sivola will go on the heavy ground expected at Kelso, but I think he’ll be one of the top staying chasers for some of the Nationals in a few years, as ever with Ferdy’s, they need some time to come into their own. The same applies with Jaunty Journey that he is still young but he does like heavy ground and I don’t think the trip will be a problem, and he looks, if he runs, a decent eachway bet.
December 6, 2009 at 10:19 #262388I reckon Morgan Be might just sneak this off top weight especially now Justwhateverulike is a non-runner. Garleton is an intruiging runner as he fits most of the Trends for this race.
I’d easily lay Royal Rosa. Just not convinced at all!
December 6, 2009 at 11:15 #262399Doesn’t Royal Rosa need to win something like this to stand any chance of getting into the National [weightwise]? Would imagine he is there to do as well as possible for that reason. Not for a minute suggesting that he has any chance of winning, however..just an observation.

Agreed, douginho.
Consistent sort who could very well improve for this marathon trip. Has a course victory to his name and will love the conditions. Regular pilot, James Reveley, is in the saddle again and Keith Reveley has his horses in fine form.
Quite a few exposed types in the field, but with only ten starts to his name, Bold Ransom is open to further improvement.
