Was at Warwick today with a friend of mine, we both commented before the race that given JP McManus had 2 runners in the race (O’Neill and Powell trained) that the less fancied one would be out the back and running for a handicap mark.

The horse was keen to post – pulling etc. and given they didn’t go a great gallop early on you’d think that the jockey would choose to race the horse handy thus trying to minimise the effect of his pulling but nope he was content to sit 2nd or 3rd last throughout the race, wasn’t touched with the stick and ran on well to take eighth place – ridden more prominently or even asked for an effort earlier/more vigorously and he’d have definitely been in the first 4.

American World is the horse – the stewards looked into the running and riding of the horse and "comments of connections were noted" and the vet found he’d suffered an overeach.

It’s not the first time something similar has happened with this yard either – see Princess Flame’s runs over the summer.

Its not just McManus horses that do this but look at the recent race at Ludlow that Old Brigade won but Ring Bo Ree had at its mercy. Neither of them had done anything in their novice careers but now with handicap marks and upped in trip (why do they never up them until they get a mark) they are wel backed on course, suddenly find form to win and will both no doubt run up nice sequences before they are done. Its also interesting that Old Brigade has since switch ownership. The same is true on the flat with Dunlop and Prescott horses. The whole handicap system needs revewing because the horses who try ever run and often just miss out get hammered while those who only try when it suits them get away with it week in week out and its the punters who are in the dark until the money is down.
