Scenic Blast, Australian HOTY, is now in John Shirreffs’ barn at Santa Anita. He was shipped to America after bleeding in the Hong Kong International Sprint on December 13. In California he can legally race while using the anti-bleeding medication Lasix. I’m sure John Shirreffs, trainer of Zenyatta and Life is Sweet, will take good care of him and not bring him back to the races before he is ready. I’m looking forward to seeing him run.
Looks like Scenic Blast made the trip OK.

Racing on drugs is wrong.Nothing wrong with lasix if the guy gets to run his heart out yet again
January 10, 2010 at 15:37 #269132Train with lasix if you must.
But in my opinion both lasix and / or bute should not be in a racehorse’s system at time of race.Value Is EverythingJanuary 14, 2010 at 10:03 #269780Looks pretty happy in his new barn.

Of course multiple Breeders Cup winners tends to make for a happy barn.
January 28, 2010 at 15:47 #272546Scenic Blast is headed to the farm for a little rest and healing. I’m guessing he hasn’t healed enough from bleeding in the HK Int’l Sprint on Dec 13 to train at the track yet. Too bad, I was looking forward to seeing him going 21 and 42 on the Santa Anita downhill turf course. Maybe he will be back before the Santa Anita meet is over.

Hasn’t Scenic Blast got the most beautiful white face!, I can’t believe Zenyatta drinks Guiness that has to be my favourite clip of all time, you see her body language just before you pour the drink out and look at her face light up when she tastes it!
March 19, 2010 at 09:13 #283840Looks like Scenic Blast is back in training at John Shirreffs barn. Only a brief glimpse of him in this video but they said "he is headed for the main track", presumably for a gallop. Video is mainly about Zardana returning from beating Rachel Alexandra, Life is Sweet taking a last ride before retiring to Kentucky and some footage of Zenyatta and some other horses working out.
April 20, 2010 at 20:18 #291385some photos of the fella for those who follow him.

he’s supposed to be a barn favorite and is said to have a great personality.
should also add that unlike Z, he doesn’t much care for carrots. i will ask if he likes beer
as far as i know he’s just in light training, hasn’t had any official workouts here in the U.S.June 27, 2010 at 20:34 #303484Scenic Blast runs today in the 7th race at Hollywood Park a 6f turf stakes race for $60,000 added. Scenic Blast is ridden by Mike Smith and carries top weight of 123, giving 7 lbs. to the 4yo filly Unzip Me who carries 116. Scenic Blast is 5/2 on the morning line and Unzip Me who has won 5 straight races in turf sprints at 6-6.5f, including a G3 is favored at 2-1. Shirreffs usually has them ready to run so let’s see if Scenic Blast can win in his comeback race, good luck to him.
June 27, 2010 at 23:49 #303533Scenic Blast was a strong closing 4th beaten less than two lengths after a terrible ride by Mike Smith. Scenic Blast missed the break, dropped back to last off a slow pace (23.32, 45.41), was very wide around the turn – Did Mike think he was riding Zenyatta in a 9f race?
The final time was a quick 1:08.40 Take Scenic Blast next out – the way he was coming on in the stretch I doubt he had any bleeding problems.July 27, 2010 at 10:52 #309039Scenic Blast worked in company getting 5f in 59.8 breezing. This video is taken from the Hollywood Park backstretch. John Shirreffs is working Scenic Blast like he does Zenyatta, giving him a target horse with several lengths head start to run down in the stretch. Rumor is that Shirreffs might try to stretch Scenic Blasts speed to 8 or 8.5 furlongs on the Del Mar turf or maybe he is trying to build his endurance a bit for the longer sprints at 6.5 or 7f.

Thanks for the updates. Any idea what his likely next target is JHorse?
July 28, 2010 at 01:23 #309255Possibly Aug. 1 in the Bing Crosby 6f 3yo and up $250,000 G1. According to this article Scenic Blast had a bit of a setback in his training when he got an infection.

Still looks to me like John Shirreffs is training him for a longer race, maybe using the Crosby as a prep.

Equipment Changes: 4 – El Brujo – Blinkers OnAugust 2, 2010 at 01:06 #310500Much improved race from Scenic Blast in the G1 Crosby at Del Mar, 2nd time out in America, Pinched off at the break and bumped by horses on both sides, SB muscled his way through, moved into a stalking position, saved ground on the turn, moved off the rail entering the stretch and couldn’t get to the winner but finished 2nd about 3 lengths in front of the third horse. OK for me as I had him across the board and the 3/5 favorite ran out of the money. BTW, this was on the main track NOT on the turf. Scenic Blast looks to be coming to hand for Shirreffs.
There is a video link in this story;
August 4, 2010 at 01:42 #310841Another video link that shows the start of the Crosby several times. Notice the 5 horse rears up at the start then almost stumbles this causes the 4 horse to spook and move into Scenic Blast (#3 on the gate), that and the 2 horse coming out causes SB to be badly pinched at the start and have to fight his way through to get into contention which had to take something out of SB.
