I wouldn’t even mention them in the same breath. Rachel is so versatile and equally effective over hurdles and fences.
Bryony sometimes just rides from the front without thinking too much, imo.
December 28, 2019 at 17:26 #1478397I can’t believe Kemboy will win a GC as he,s simply not a good enough jumper , I’m sure he will come on for the run , what did you guys think of presenting Percy ?
Pick 3 on Saturday champion 2025/2026
December 28, 2019 at 17:29 #1478398Theres a reason bryony doesnt ride any of nicholls better horses other than frodon
December 28, 2019 at 17:31 #1478399Didnt think percy travelled or jumped like a gold cup winner
I’d be windy about the form of the race altogether
Beating monalee a nose isnt gold cup winning form
December 28, 2019 at 17:41 #1478400Agree. Frost is an average jockey who through happenstance managed to get on two decent horses (that have both done nothing this season). Blackmore is genuinely top class. I would really like to see her win the championship in Ireland because she is more than good enough. I also hope De Bromhead and Blackmore continue to get more good winners and challenge the Mullins and Elliot domination of Irish racing. The game needs competition.
December 28, 2019 at 20:35 #1478409I rarely bet now in these big Irish races. Seem to be won on ‘his turn now’ basis – doubtless still favouring the horse most favoured by conditions on the day, but to my eye it’s become pretty much shuffle the usual suspects, stick your hand in the hat and pick one.
I’ve mentioned before that many Irish races, to my eye, seem to be run on a crawl, crawl, crawl, sprint basis. In these graded races, they’ll often go a bit faster early and you’ll then see all sorts charging home late. It’s as if they are all guessing at the pace – though Blackmore was superb in front today and almost pulled it off.
Just how much has the Gold Cup and perhaps other graded races affected the training regime of Irish horses? Half the time I wonder if trainers themselves even know where their horse is mentally and physically before March 1st.
December 28, 2019 at 22:19 #1478418Rewatched the race and think I was harsh on presenting percy
He was travelling strongly 2 out before getting badly outpaced when the sprint for him began
The stronger stamina test of the gold cup will be more his bag
And delta work did very well to come from the back to beat monalee who was gifted a soft lead, something that happens far too often in big Irish races, every other race the jockeys let one or two horses go 5+ lengths clear with a very soft lead
Edit
In fact I see a lot of firms have actually shortened presenting percy for the gold cup on the back of that run
December 28, 2019 at 23:08 #1478420The soft leads in Irish races is maddening. I was pleased to see Heskin and Blackmore serve it up to the front two in the novice chase on Thursday. Laurina had an excuse but Fakir’s limitations were exposed.

They were also confirmed by an average chaser called Samcro.
