Beverley D Stakes
£175k to the winnerI’m no expert on us racing.
(Evidenced by the fact I’ve listed it as Saratoga.) or any racing for that matter.
This race has seven runners and from what I can make of it four principles.Ryan Moore is here again and won onboard last time in the US a shade cosily, albeit after getting into a fix.
The key elements here concern pace, form, weight, trainer’s race record and the application of Lassix
Mean Mary
Naval Laughter
Lemista
Santa Barbara
Both the above (in bold) receive Lassix for the first time.
This is significant due to its dramatic effect on the horses as witnessed by the form defying performances by AP O’Briens trio in the Breeder’s cup.
Lassix gives first time horses a huge advantage over those already on it.
The trainer Chad Brown has won this race six times including the last five, which puts his horse at the front of the queue here. By all accounts the rest of the field are already on Lassix.
In pecking order
This looks to be a straight battle between
Lemista and Santa Barbara
With Mean Mary taking third ahead of Naval Laughter.
Probably the reverse forecast
And two Trifectas ( as described above)
The other crucial element is weight allowance.
Relative Juvenile Santa Barbara gets a 8lb pull so added to the Lassix is well in here and really should place( at least 1st or second) if kept handy just off the pace.August 14, 2021 at 19:09 #1555786Arlington 1049

August 15, 2021 at 06:38 #1555981Disappointing when you get the first three correct and don’t collect.
Santa Barbara was always going to win this with weight allowance and first time Lassix.
Lateral thinking and the correct call needed to be a banker tricast.Ho hum the winner anyway.
The question is with the 8lbs of free energy was Lassix really needed?
You could see the other horses bar three hit the wall at the extent of their Lassix range late on.
There is an air of surreal around this racing. A bit like watching the men’s Olympic 100 metres final.August 15, 2021 at 11:28 #1556044Why didn’t Santa Barbara have Lasix in her penultimate run in the good ol’ yoo ess eh?

August 15, 2021 at 12:51 #1556116I don’t know.
I would guess the opposition were not that strong. If you watch that race you can actually see the moment most of the field hit “the wall”.August 16, 2021 at 12:13 #1556762Lasix is banned from NYRA stakes races TTC
August 16, 2021 at 12:43 #1556783Thank you for clearing that up.
Santa Barbara got on ok there without it.
The specific reason I can see is to,1. be on a level playing field and 2.take advantage of the clear ( clear and immediate) boost over horses already on it. -
