They used to call it “the graveyard of Champions,” but after this year’s summer increasingly-tragic meeting they might simply be calling it “the graveyard.”

Social media uproar – and it seems mainly to be USA racing fans – as another horse dies in action there in a dirt Flat race.

Churchill Downs was closed after 12 deaths Saratoga has now had 13 since July – some heart attacks some breakdowns but some not specifically related to the track. It’s almost killed me, and so it follows that it may also close.

The blob Bell tolls on American racing. Dream hard Secratariat the vapours may be all consuming.
All that being said I came in late after being tempted by some devilish late night viscous bargains in Sainsburys, and consequently only caught the later evening programme – so missed the death completely – and thereby had a consummate ball. Flush certainly, but there is an element of remorse. I am not a man of straw, and regret fills my conscience but not to depress me. I must to bed.

I wouldn’t say you are a party pooper Jack but possibly not the number one for an invite.
Saratoga may live on despite Davies raised eyebrows.

Time for a coming together here and a resolution.

You say three Hail Marys and I’ll recite the whole “damned” double my penance rosary, whilst at the same time, dipping my cornED feet in uncomfortably hot water.
What Graw (Grandpa or Grawpa shortened to Graw) used to call a slipper bath you had to demand your money back after, and spoken in the stern tones of the Scottish Flash lady….

    ” And no messin’ ”

I buy Flash – God Bless all that may be offended.

I must admit I considered a lot of the social media comment to be self seeking, self centred faux outrage – all about how it made THEM feel, how it was “hard to watch the next race” (though they clearly still did).

There were the usual posts from those who felt the most salient aspect of all this was what it had cost them as punters (invariably followed by the equally-distasteful “holier than thou” moralising pile ons).

And as per there was the usual “feeling sorry for the connections.”

It’s the actual horse I always feel sorry for, actually – the horse is the one who pops its clogs – life (usually wealthy and privileged) goes on for connections.

The fact two fatalities this summer involved horses with Grade 1s at their mercy at the time no doubt heightened the tension.

There is clearly a problem on Saratoga’s dirt track, but possibily the ever-increasing fragility of the ever-more inbred thoroughbred breed globally may be a bigger factor.

Heartbreaking for all those who look after the horse too. My future daughter in law is a vet nurse and deals with animals passing away constantly. Don’t know how she does it. Seen friends distraught for days after losing pets. I hope they get to the bottom of this soon otherwise us racing is in big trouble which means the whole breeding industry. Racecourses shutting due to them being worth more as real estate. I wonder if we will have the breeders Cup in a few years if this continues.
We’ve basically stopped fast ground horses in Europe from being a thing. If the US goes that way too that will just be wrong.

Apologies and it was 11 deaths at Saratoga not the unlucky 13, but admittedly in the same six week gestation period of the 12 deaths at Churchill Downs. Something is wrong here and it smells, but this is against the backdrop of horse deaths reducing year on year in the U S A. I once saw seven buses arrive at a bus stop at the same time. I was dressed in military apparel and that was in 1968 which was a comparatively good year due to social unrest on account of the putrid smell of napalm mixed in with the traditional morning oat flakes.
Track or trainers ? – I know who my 💰 is on. Hopefully the ongoing enquiry will resolve where blame lies and get to the drugged steroidal bottom of it all, but the remedy will need root and branch, and my guess is all we may see is autumn leaves falling.

And how many years can a problem exist
Before it is washed and set free.
    The answer my friend…

    Well let’s reserve judgement
    until we read the report

Top of the morning to you Purwell – I have been up disgracefully all night. I must turn in now but clear the area first of all evidence of my own weaknesses.

    Chink !

As for the condition of the two types of track the aim is to get optional racing ground that is firm in the case of the grass track and fast for the dirt.

I remember the Thursday racing at Saratoga two days before. It was 63 degrees a southerly windspeed of 6.5 and a high humidity of 84 degrees. There was rain in the evening and I got the impression the dirt became sloppy and the grass would have taken some water in too. As far as the timings there was 34 minutes between each race. I wished to place a bet on the last grass race of the meet timed at 23.18.
The race to my absolute surprise went of just shy of five minutes early. I suffered the private ignominy of breaking a rule and trying to snatch some value betting in running. I am 3459 miles distant from the course so getting info as to why this happened is difficult. It is a bettors woe I have not suffered before.

The weather in New York can fluctuate greatly and you can get large snowstorms. Not the ideal location for a racecourse I would have thought and you get a lot of political heat often blowing in from Washington which is 337 miles away. This may be happening at the moment!
