al portadorFebruary 24, 2011 at 23:01 #342100Saw Safety Zone and Grand Cash yesterday at the track.
Both are well built horses, compact and reasonably powerful, well suited to the Garrison Savannah tightness.
Especially like Safety Zone, he is looking tight and ready.
Unfortunately, looking at their recent records and times, I dont see anyone locally past Apostle putting up much of a fight against these two and JustCallMeRog.
Probably we will be looking at Apostle breaking first and heading the first three furlongs as usual, followed by JustCallMeRog tracking, a pack including Reward me, Rockamadour, Bad Action, Mingun Temple (nice locally based horse, owned by the daughter of our former Champion Trainer), then another pack including John Brian, Safety Zone and Grand Cash.
I expect as they approach the five furlong mark, JustCallMeRog and Reward Me will try to get closer to Apostle, so too a few of the middle markers. When they reach the three furlongs, The couple behind Apostle will start to panic a bit and chase him hard, the middle pack with John Brian and Mingun Temple will take after, lastly Safety Zone and Grand Cash will wait late but start a long run between the three and two, turning it full on as they swing into the straight, just about a furlong and a half to go.
On paper, the finish should be between Grand Cash, Safety Zone and JustCallMeRog the first three places between them, then anyone for the fourth.
BUT, things that ‘COULD’ happen:
– Apostle settles with no one heading him and gives the field the slip, making the stretch run a fight
– Reward Me could spring a surprise…maybe better than the paper
– Mingun Temple could surprise and run on the firmer ground, he appears to favour a bit of give, he has looked fantastic recently
– John Bryan loves a FAST pace, when everyone else is dying in the last furlong, could play into his hands
Should be fun. But I do like Safety Zone.
Looking forward to the Spa Sprint, probably will be the best quality sprint we have seen here in about twenty years, with the couple coming. We dont have sprinters here like we once had.
February 25, 2011 at 18:02 #342176theres a rumour around the track jamie spencer might be rideing in the gold cup one of the st kitts horses.
February 25, 2011 at 23:10 #342227The draw has created some interesting issues.
Firstly, the frontrunners, Apostle and JustCallMeRog are drawn very wide 14 and 11 respectively.
Apostle should get across if he is out fast, he was drawn 10 last year, it is just the lost time and effort.
Then, Showmethemoney, a locally bred stayer, is drawn 1. He has to get out fast and into a good position or he will be in trouble.
The effort would be to get out fast, which he is capable of, and settle a ouple of lengths off Apostle. Then go for broke at three furlongs out.
It makes little sense to break and attempt to go head to head with Apostle, most likely anyone that does is ending their own chances.
However, one slim possibility is if the attempt to run Showmethemoney from in front and go for broke.
He has won from in front some time ago, but not with Apostle in the field.
But, if he settles too far back he will just be waiting for Grand Cash and Safety Zone to blitz him later in the race, and throwing away the box 1 draw.
With only a few pace horses in the race, better bet may be to get behind Apostle and JustCallMeRog, then put the cards on the table from the three furlong.
The thing is, a few horses that have gone out fast in the cup have done well, Precision (2nd), Alto Jane (1st)/ Jeblita (3rd), Federico (1st), Apostle (3rd), Peace Envoy (1st),but those have been solid horses.
The late runner has always been suited to the race provided that the front runners are not strong over the 9. The frontrunners more of a surprise but can get a good run if they are in tip top shape and get a bit of a slip & breather between the 5 furlongs out and 3 furlongs out.
