Some great races for a Thursday evening.
The highlight being Peacock winning the Cantor Fitzgerald Corporate Finance Heron Stakes.
The Brigadier Gerard field doesn’t look too shabby either.!!

I see Peacock also has an entry at Newmarket on the Saturday over 10f. That is the way I would go with this horse as he seems to take too long to quicken but stays on very well at the business end. Hannon knows best mind….. ;-)

Small but select field in the Brigadier Gerard.
Arab Spring, Tryster, Western Hymn, Eagle Top, Tullius and Niceofyoutotellme make up the numbers. I would like to see Arab Spring take another step forward here.

Decent looking and interesting field there.

I won’t be touching Arab Spring though. The form of his win this season looks pretty whiffy. Pether’s Moon, Romsdal and Windshear have all disappointed since their runs behind Arab Spring in The John Porter at Newbury. Obviously Stoute’s horse is far from exposed and the stable have been in better form this year but others in the race also have room for improvement yet.

Tryster has been the one for money, but not for me because he is Godolphin trained. He has been mopping up on the all-weather but I feel he’s worth opposing at the odds tackling turf and better opposition.

Gosden saddles two and I feel Western Hymn is just a shade short of top class. He has proven fitness with a win this season but I feel Eagle Top may have more scope and if he’s fit enough he has a good bit of form where he beat Adelaide and Snow Sky on fast ground at Royal Ascot in the Edward VII. Not disgrace in the King George when 4th to Taghrooda, if he’s back to something like it, he would be my pick at 4/1, in receipt of 3lbs. Frankie is on board him and William Buick is on Western Hymn.

Eagle to come out on top for me.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Also on the card the race for two year olds, The National Stakes sees an interesting line up with several last time out winners.

The Kevin Ryan colt Areen got good reviews for his sole run and win but runner up Ravenhoe let the form down when favourite at Ponty next time.

Case Key could well be decent for Charlie Hills and the stable is finally getting a few winners now after a very lean spell.

Tawdeef won well for Brian Meehan on debut but it was a Bath maiden and I am not a fan of that track for form.

I think it will boil down to the rematch between Godolphin’s Steady Pace and Hannon’s King Of Rooks. Betting has them 9/4 joint favourites here.

Steady Pace won the first match up comfortably and you would think he was sure to hold the Hannon horse as he had more than three lengths in hand that day over 5f at Ascot. The Hannon horse was the more fancied that day but cpuldn;t match the speed of the Appleby trained runner. The trouble I have with Godolphin is the number of these good first time up winners they have, who then get labelled, “can only improve” but then manage to get beaten, usually as favourite, on their next start.

King Of Rooks put his first experience to good use when hosing in by six lengths on his next start at Newbury. Even dropped back to 5f here, I feel he is the more likely colt to progress and I think he is the call in the race, based on my previous observation of Godolphin youngsters in similar scenarios. Maybe I’ll be proved Raven Mad though ;-)

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

I’ll be at Newmarket on Saturday Nathan so I’ll get a nice picture of him for you (hopefully winning :good: )

Definitely some good races tomorrow at Sandown.
I have no idea what will win the Brigadier Gerard !! I can make a case for none of them winning (GULP).
So that’s no bet in that race then.

I fancy Corregio in the first and Case Key in the second.

Also Donncha and Directorship in the last. They both won well last time and could be in lightly especially Directorship.

Anyway I digress it does look a classy meeting

    Of the Brigadier:
Not one of these likes to race prominently. Best I can find is Arab Spring who sometimes (only sometimes) tracks pace. Seems a straightforward individual and with Ryan Moore in the saddle imo the most likely to seize the initiative and get positional advantage. Western Hymn wasn’t far behind leaders last time, but ground is likely to be against the round actioned galloper tomorrow, mostly held up and seems to have his quirks – so changing tactics might be a problem. Stable companion and Dettori chosen Eagle Top has class and would not be surprised to see him develop in to a top class 1m4f horse. But at this trip and has (so far) always been dropped out the back – might need his first race for over 300 days too – total change in tactics appears unlikely with teaching him for other targets in mind. Therefore unlikely to have the pace for this. Tullius usually held up, but does have miler speed. However, he was well below par last time and Balding not in as good form now than he was then. Niceofyoutotellme comes from behind in handicaps and may be effective in truly run races at this level. Improving, but this looks like being a different scenario. Tryster must show he’s as good on turf, but showed a remarkable turn of foot in a similarly slowly run race last time and is considerably better than the distances back to placed horses suggest. imo Is likely to have more speed than his rivals here.

Don’t usually back favourites as main bets in what I believe will be a slowly run race, but made an exception here. Am on Tryster with a saver on Arab Spring.

Also, (thanks to TAPK binging my attention to it) have backed Tryster @ 14/1 for the Prince Of Wales. :good:

Good renewal of the Henery II. I’ve taken Trip To Paris with a saver on Vent De Force. Main selection is now best priced 5/1, still reasonable imo but you’ll probably get quite a bit better if waiting for the morning.

Trip To Paris won the Chester Cup with a turn of foot. Probably better than distances back to placed horses after coming from a difficult posi in the “straight”. Ed Dunlop was also in poor form at that time; Trip To Paris one of very few to run well for the stable. Trainer is now in better form and TTP may well be able to improve further. With front/prominent runners High Jinx and Forever Now (Forgotten Voice has been up there in the past too) should be a well enough run race. TTP’s improvement has come on (probably) softer ground, but had good-firm form earlier that was (at that time) as good as anything he’d produced. Simenon is their supposed biggest rival, but will he be fit and why has he not run for some time? Curiously hooded for the first time and weak in the betting tonight. Forever Now is my idea of my duo’s main opposition. 1 1/2 lengths behind the fav (saver bet) Vent De Force last time but had a better run through than the Morrison colt. Morrison is in reasonable form now but not the outstanding run (won 7 of next 12) after VDF’s latest run. Forgotten Voice is now a 10 year old, fully exposed, could see him placed but not up to winning an average Henry II. High Jinx‘s trainer fanshawe isn’t in great form and not enough promise on first 2015 start to suggest he’ll stay in front.Forget the other two.

My opinion on the BG has changed somewhat !!
If Eagle Top is fit enough first time out it will beat these on the way to bigger and better things.

Just two maybe’s the trip and first time out ??
It is a race to watch and savour but I shan’t be having a bet.

Pretty clear that Gosden views Eagle Top as a 10F horse regardless of his runs over further last year. He’s entered for the Prince of wales, the Eclipse and the Irish Champion Stakes, but not for the Coronation Cup. Similar pattern to Nathaniel and he had no problem with 10F at Sandown first time out as a 4-y-old.

I think Arab Spring is plenty short enough at 7/4. The punters love Michael Stoute horses though and Consort is a warm order this evening as well.

I am not so much worried about the trip for Eagle Top, much more of a concern for me is how straight he will be. John Gosden’s Remote returned from a lay off last week and looked as rusty as a bucket of nails filled with salty water. Eagle Top hasn’t been away anywhere near as long but you have to wonder how wound up he will be for this. He’s a group 2 winner running in a Group 3 race and he is the least exposed runner in the field. Arab Spring is progressive but I don’t see him anywhere near the stand out bet that his odds suggest.

If betting means anything, the horse who cannot win tonight is Johnny Barnes, another Gosden inmate. He was 3/1 and 7/2 in the early betting for tonight but is out to a whopping 8/1, which looks very worrying.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

I’m not a Stoute fan but this is the sort of horse and race he does do quite well in.

That is to be my parachute/airbag if 2 of Hughesies earlier ones don’t get me up and about Eagle Top, so impressive 1st. time out last year then beaten in a h/cap at Leicester but must have bled or something only to progress so well.
A very interesting card awaits. :good:

Gosden said Eagle Top’s blood count was all wrong after the Leicester handicap and they had to take time to nurse the horse back to full health. The trainer said last year that he felt a mile and a half would be the horse’s optimum trip but added that he had speed, in fact too much speed to be a Leger horse.

William Buick was impressed with Eagle Top in the Edward VII at Royal Ascot, declaring after the race:-

“I didn’t realise he was this good,” Buick said. “He swatted them off in a matter of strides. It was only his third run and everything is open to him.

“He baffled me a bit today. I just didn’t realise he had that kind of speed.

“He came here, he didn’t turn a hair and was very relaxed. He’s got all the attributes of a top, top racehorse.

“This horse… you’ll be hearing a lot more from him.”

We’ll get some idea tonight if his confidence was warranted.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
