Sam Thomas was this morning airlifted to hospital after suffering a bad fall on the gallops at Paul Nicholls’ yard.
Thomas is reported to have escaped serious injury, but is still doubtful to appear at next week’s Cheltenham Festival.
The Gold Cup-winning jockey sustained back and neck injuries and was taken to Royal United Hospital in Bath following a schooling accident at first lot.
Trainer Tom George, for whom Thomas is stable jockey, told Press Association Sport: "He had a bad fall schooling at Paul Nicholls’ yard this morning and was airlifted to hospital.
"I’ve spoken to his girlfriend, who has been allowed to talk to him.
"Initial X-rays have shown that there are no broken bones.
"He’s very stiff and sore but we are very hopeful there is no serious damage.
"The next 24 hours will tell us more."
A spokesperson for Nicholls’ yard added: "He was down schooling first lot this morning when he had a fall.
"He was taken to the Royal United Hospital in Bath."
Doesn’t sound good, apparently took a heavy fall on Woolcombe Folly, here’s hoping he makes a speedy recovery.
March 11, 2010 at 13:36 #281699Hospital says: "He is stable and is
awaiting further tests."The fact that it took 30 mins to get in the chopper doesn’t sound good.

March 11, 2010 at 14:14 #281711Yep, best of luck to him for a speedy recovery. Sounds like he may have been lucky enough to escape serious injury.
March 11, 2010 at 18:03 #281745Been confirmed he’s out of festival. Big shame when you have such a good horse as TM to ride.
March 11, 2010 at 19:10 #281757Awful news for Sam, wish him a speedy recovery.
March 11, 2010 at 19:25 #281760Same here, Cracking rider and such a shame he wont be in the Gold Cup mix up.
March 12, 2010 at 10:51 #281846Ouch! "crack in a vertebra in his neck" sounds like one of those extremely painful things i hope never to experience! Wishing Sam a speedy recovery.
From a punting perspective it looks like Paddy Brennan will take most of his rides for Tom George while Barry Geraghty will ride Tricky Trickster.

Best of luck to Sam for a speedy recovery. You can almost be assured that one or two of his Cheltenham horses will salute now.
