He’s a huge price is Imperial Commander for a horse with the handle "The best I’ve ever trained"
Considering Exotic Dancer, Barber Shop and Big Zeb are running elsewhere, Tidal Bay seems to have lost his way and t here is some doubt about Our Vic, the 12/1 available about IC is very tempting.
VPU was impressive but the Ryanair takes a lot more winning than that race dideven with the expected non runners
He looks the main danger to VPU I’m just wondering why on earth he’s such a big price which is slightly worrying.
February 14, 2009 at 23:38 #210251Im thinking VPU for this at 9/2 could well be one of the bets of the festival in hindisght, he is always at his best at cheltenham, looks to love 2m4f and ran with credit in the King George which looked a stamina test that saw most of the opposition beaten some way from. There are others who tick boxes but VPU ticks every box for me and he is the one the others have to beat IMO.
Wish I’d lumped on when I wrote this, however, I’m still happy enought o take gwanako to cheltenham, VPU was incredible today, but Gwanako is progressive and could easily run into a place, I’ll not be ripping up my slip on him yet.

As I wrote in the Ascot Chase thread, Gwanako looked aweful in the parade ring today and I am sure he will run better at Cheltenham.
However I have backed VPU for the fourth festival running – although this year he is not my banker for the first time.
February 15, 2009 at 06:57 #210314An awesome performance from Voy Por Ustedes on Saturday.
I’ve always held the horse in high regard and I hope his detractors will start appreciating him a bit more.
He loves Cheltenham and comes into his own at this time of the year.
Tidal Bay is the biggest danger to the former Champion Chaser. He ran a cracking race on his seasonal bow behind Master Minded before a solid weight-carrying performance at Wetherby. He failed to see out the trip around Cheltenham in testing conditions on his latest effort.
His jumping has been his Achilles heel this season, but it’s testament to his ability that he’s managed to run with such credit against good horses despite these problems.
Like VPU, he’s a better horse in the spring and loves Cheltenham. I think on pure talent he’s the best horse in the race and I still maintain that only Master Minded, Kauto Star and Denman boast superior engines.
If he jumps as well as he did in the Arkle last year, he wins. I think TB stays three miles on a flat track and I’d love to see him tackle the King George next year, but he’s tailor-made for two miles-five around Cheltenham, a place where you can hypothetically add a couple of extra furlongs to the stated distance.
It’s such a shame Noland will be missing, isn’t it? Still a cracking race with the likes of Our Vic and Imperial Commander also in the line-up.
Really looking forward to this one.
February 15, 2009 at 18:48 #210372From what looked an ultra competitive race a month ago, is starting to cut up and look a bit easier to solve! For me, past festival form (or past cheltenham form) is such a key thing and so cant see past Vy Por Ustedes and Tidal Bay. Depending on the odds on the day, I may be happy to invest a large each way bet on Tidal Bay. His cheltenham form just cant be knocked.
March 9, 2009 at 18:06 #214588Tidal Bay has been taken out of the Champion Chase field.
If HJ is undecided at this late stage, I’d prefer connections wait for Aintree.
March 9, 2009 at 18:10 #214589Noland won’t be back till Autumn 2010.
March 12, 2009 at 06:46 #215549My old friend VPU is being touted as the banker of the meetng by many.
An Unbeatable good thing he has been called.
He may well win but he is the worst value at the meeting in my book.
Lovely horse but the opposition are hardly the type of horses you can walk over.
Our Vic won this race last year in great style beating the same horses as Denman beat in the Lexus at similar weights and went on to defeat Kauto Star at Aintree. VPU couldn’t blow wind up Kauto’s backside and if David Pipe has Our Vic at his best VPU wouldn’t live with him.
Tidal Bay an awsome winner of the Arkle has been experimated with all season rather than being trained. He doesn’t get 3 miles he couldn’t live with MM over 2 miles. If he is at his best and this proves to be his best distance then watch out.
Imperial Commander won the Paddy Power with a very low weight but it never stopped the usually laid back NTD shouting from the roof tops he was the best horse he has ever trained. Tried over 3 miles he failed to get the trip. A young horse with only two runs and comes here fresh as a daisy might just make VPU look like an OAP and is my choice for this.
Monet Garden is no slow coach and on his day couls spring a surprise.
VPU was awesome last time out but beat nothing of note. Lovely horseas I say but wouldn’t be carrying lumps of my cash.
Good luck to those who have backed him but I’m doing a Ginger for once and going for value.
March 12, 2009 at 15:02 #215605Monets Garden is a huge price for a horse of his class; I know he doesn’t like Cheltenham etc etc but he’s got a bit of give in the ground and for that price I’m having an ew on him.

Fist you love making me sweat don’t you?
Listen me old mate, Imperial Commander is a handicapper and not up to winning a Grade 1 unless strange things happen.
Tidal Bay isn’t fully fit.
There’s two thirds of the opposition not to worry about. Our Vic I accept is a danger he’s the one I’ll be watching but even at his best he’s not as good as Voy Por who has everything in his favour and is in the form of his life.He has to be value at odds against (and I got 2/1 ).
All the right money is coming for him he may go off odds on now according to David Williams of Ladbrokes whereas Our Vic is weak on the exchanges.
It’s looking good …………………………. but I know what can happen in this game and I’m not stupid enough to be counting chickens. so stop trying to give me the colly wobbles.
March 12, 2009 at 18:00 #215684Imperial Commander for me – put a couple of quid out of my free £10 bet on him (last of the big spenders!) Didnt nigel say the was one of the best horses he has trained – unproven stayer over 3m + so this is his best trip and best course. I know VPU is class but I get the impression he is in this just to avoid MM – 2m 5f is a specialist distance even more than 2m4f – worth taking on at these odds imo with a horse that possibly has more improvment in him.
Hope they all come back safe and sound
March 12, 2009 at 18:01 #215685Would love to see Tidal Bay win this. Has run with credit this season under a variety conditions, between two and three miles, against some good horses.
His weight-carrying performance at Wetherby was a solid effort and his Cheltenham third was fantastic considering he was badly cut quite early on in the race.
I still maintain that he’s the most talented horse in the field and if he puts it all together, he wins. The trip should be perfect, it’s just a case of whether or not he’s fit enough to do himself justice.
In my opinion, only Kauto Star and Master Minded can boast superior engines.
Voy Por won very well at Ascot, but it’s hard to know how much that took out of him and this will be a tough race, with nowhere to hide.
A worthy favourite. The one to beat. Should be a cracking race.

I’m with Fists on this one. I’ve yet to be convinced that VPU will stay this trip in a truly run race.
In both his wins at similar distances, he has had the race won a long way from home, which never truly tested his stamina, and capitulated rather quickly in the Old Roan when challenged by decent horses at the business end of the race.
Some might say he’ll stay the distance because of his King George 3rd, but he only stayed in in the same way that Binocular did in this year’s Champion, and Kauto Star did in the last Gold Cup, i.e. not the speed to win it.
Fascinating race.March 12, 2009 at 18:31 #215696Im convinced VPU stays the trip doing handstands but am going to stick with gwanako here, in the hope that he’ll get closer on better ground this time round.
March 12, 2009 at 19:50 #215706I give up. Awful week.
March 12, 2009 at 19:55 #215707A few uncharacteristic errors from VPU.
Imperial Commander loves it round Cheltenham.
What to make of Tidal Bay? Looked set to be tailed off turning in, but make up a helluva lot of ground in the straight. It will be interesting to know just how many lengths he did make up.
What’s his best trip? Strange, but very talented horse.

Well results this week suggest I know bugger all so probably not the best to answer but Tidal Bay I think runs to a similar level over any trip from two to three miles. Can’t believe he was 100% today so probably best not to judge him on todays performance.
