If we accept the argument that the whip is to assist in steering / controlling racehorses, rather than simply flaying them in a finish, then what was Russell up to ?
Using the whip in his right hand causing Jameson to hang into the taped off rail on his left hand side.
Russell wasn’t to know Jameson wanted to go around again, Coggy. Next time he rides the horse suspect he’ll have the whip in the other hand just in case, but personally wouldn’t blame the jockey today.
I thought when Jameson was second at Newbury a top jockey would have had him better placed so as not to have to steer round the water after the last, but after Saturday there’s not many better then Russell and he couldn’t keep him from veering left again so it’s something the horse does. Admittedly he wasn’t good enough in a strong race. Having backed Kalondra when he was comprehensively beaten at Wincanton that was a shock how easily he won.
