As I was departing the course after today’s meeting I heard a snippet of the message on one of the staff’s radio that a horse was running loose along the road. Turned out it was Rufio who unseated Lucy Brown then completed a circuit before taking off up the road towards Prestonpans. The East Lothian Courier web site reported that the gelding was recovered unscathed.

This reminds of the aptly named Nervous Rex who got loose before the start of the Weatherby’s Super Sprint at Newbury back in 1996. That afternoon he was last spotted heading off towards Thatcham… A few years later he pitched up at a meeting I attended in Jersey at Les Landes. I presume he’d been captured in the meantime!

A similar incident I remember reading about involved Persian Tactics who got loose at Laytown beach races back in August 1994.

He swam across the River Boyne and was found in a pub garden still wearing all his tack, fortunately having come to no serious harm.

    Quote from the Racing Post:

Musselburgh’s clerk of the course Rory Innes on Rufio:

“It was an unfortunate incident. The jockey was unseated and the horse did a full circuit and escaped through the exterior permanent railing.

“The groundstaff and everybody went off after the horse and he was caught by a member of the public. He stopped at some traffic lights.

“We sent the horse ambulance to bring him back, got him checked over and he was absolutely fine, as was the jockey.”

I like idea of Rufio thinking “Ah the lights are red, I’d better stop”

Rufio went to the front and my comment to friends when they went round the stands’ bend was “One of the partnership is dictating the pace.., and it’s not Lucy Brown!”
