Will also be 5 pounds better off in future races with The Last Samuri despite beating him 6 lengths in the National.
Surely Michael O’Leary doesn’t need any further encouragement to abort retirement plans for the horse and run again in the race next year if they can get him there in one piece.
April 13, 2016 at 08:21 #1242233Seems rather lenient when you consider that First Lieutenant was put up 14 lbs for finishing second to Don Poli at Christmas, that 14 pounds made a mess of what was going to be a decent grand national mark for FL. Anyway I dont believe the rule the world will be retired, perhaps just raced more sparingly. Having said that he does appear to be a horse that takes his races very well. For example the last time he had more than a 90 day break between races was between March 2014 and November 2014. Since then he has raced right through the winter of 2014, spring of 2015, summer of 2015, autumn 2015, winter of 2015, spring of 2016. Not many horses do that.
On a side note, what website shows the newly revised handicap marks that your quoting?April 13, 2016 at 13:26 #1242255Horse has had a lot of issues. Unless he’s the kind of animal that won’t take to retirement there’s no reason to put him back into training. I know a lot less than most on here but i’m guessing a horse that’s had 2 fractured pelvises would be more inclined to pick up another injury and connections wouldn’t forgive themselves if he did get injured again and had to be put to sleep.

April 13, 2016 at 20:22 #1242284You won’t find a rating for Rule The World on the BHA site as they only list horses trained in the UK.
The rating change referred to by Yeats is the new mark allocated by the Irish handicapper. You can find full details of the handicap marks for all Irish horses here:
http://info.hri-racing.ie/Content/RAS/NHRatings.aspx?wid=4
But bear in mind those ratings only apply to races in Ireland. The UK handicappers maintain their own ratings for Irish trained horses which are used when the race over here, but those ratings are not made public.
April 13, 2016 at 21:10 #1242293The Handicapper in Ireland put Rule The World up 8lbs to 153.
The Last Samuri was put up to 159 by the UK handicapper.
That means, that on those ratings the Bailey chaser would give 6lbs to the National winner after giving him only 1lb in this years race.
If they met in the UK the Irish horse would be given a mark the UK handicapper sees appropriate and we would find out about it about 3 minutes before the off (I exaggerate slightly, but relatively slightly)
The Grand National is a one-off with one-off weights. The going this year made it a bit of a lottery in my opinion. Nothing can be read very literally in my opinion regarding a few pounds here and there in a National anyway at the best of times.
If I had to take something from these ratings, it would be that The Last Samuri might struggle off 159 in “normal” chases.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
April 13, 2016 at 21:11 #1242294Do you know why they don’t make these public? I’d have thought that once a horse has raced here in a handicap, off a mark, they should be able to then publish a rating. I get that before it’s raced here they might not allocate a mark but once it’s raced, especially in a handicap where they have awarded it a mark, then surely any subsequent revisions/marks could then be made public?

My thoughts exactly, the only way we’ll know before next February is if Rule The World is entered in a British handicap in the meantime.
Auroras Encore ran off his revised mark in the Scottish National after he won the Grand National but that would not have applied this year if Rule The World had been entered for the race, he would have just had a 5 pound penalty.
April 14, 2016 at 08:03 #1242317My feeling is that the marks for Irish horses aren’t made public by the UK handicappers, because they don’t actually exist. Phil Smith claims that his team maintain handicaps on Irish and French racing – I think he’s bluffing and that they simply dream up a mark as and when foreigh trained horses are entered.
