Just watched this and I couldn’t really understand the trainer he doesnt seem very enthusiastic, his body language isnt confident, quite shy and quiet. When Nick was asking about Cumani and Stoute the answer’s given didn’t give me the impression he was very intrested, If I was looking to send a horse in training with Donald Mccain Jr I dont think this interview sold him very well.
Thoughts?
October 31, 2008 at 04:46 #187204I thought he came across as a very modest nice bloke- what’s wrong with that? Not everyone has to be a John Gosden or a Frankie Dettori- I’d have no trouble sending him a horse given his results with mainly moderate types up to recently. His handling of Cloudy Lane has for me been exemplary.
October 31, 2008 at 04:55 #187207He was a god-awful jockey but has become a genuinely top class trainer in a short space of time. All the more remarkable given the profile and idiosyncracies of his father. If I wanted to send a horse to any trainer, I’d look at his results first and foremost.
October 31, 2008 at 05:20 #187210I didn’t see that specific interview, posted by Mr. Wilson, so I can’t comment on it. But from his post Donald McCain jnr seems as I perceive him to be. A fairly laid back character.Unlike his dad, Ginger, they are like chalk and cheese.
He always seems to me to come across as a cool, calm and refined person, knowledgeable and intelligent.
The start of his training career has been a lot easier than Ginger’s, who had a small stable behind a used-car showroom! And having to train horses on Southport sands! But in fairness to Don jnr he’s done a good job and has expanded the yard and gallops enjoyed a successful start,40 winners in his first season and 58 winners last season and 11 so far this season, isn’t bad going at all.He seems to have kept Trevor Hemmings happy and he was basically responsible for the training of Amberleigh House, and a Festival winner on the board already.
Everyone’s different and living in the shadow of a legend, and then taking over from him, can’t have been easy. Good luck to him, he may lack the charisma but he certainly has talent.
October 31, 2008 at 06:34 #187214I like him as a trainer, his horses are consistant and usaully well placed, too my mind he is better trainer than his dad.
October 31, 2008 at 13:12 #187224Why should he be bothered about Cumani and Stoute…. Different sport completely. They may as well have asked him about his thoughts on Eric Bristow.
October 31, 2008 at 14:05 #187231The stable results improved significantly in the two or three years before McCain Senior handed over the reins. I’m sure this had a lot to with McCain Junior’s influence.
It bothers me diddly-squat how he interviews on TV, as a trainer it’s results that matter and here we have a trainer who can do the business. Any horses he sends to ‘my patch’, particularly the chasers, certainly get attention.Rob
October 31, 2008 at 14:25 #187234As Rob has stated it doesn’t matter at all how he comes across in an interview – it is the results that count.
I would much prefer to have a trainer who concetrates his efforts and energies on getting his horses fit and running well, than a trainer who is going to waste time playing-up to the media and courting publicity.
In my book if a trainer is good enough he should be able to attract decent horses without having a surrounding circus.
If I were to own a jumps horse and was looking for a trainer McCain would definitely be on the shortlist, rather than a competent trainer who has "rent a qoute" as a sideline..
As my very wise Grandmother used to point out "empty vessels make the most noise."
October 31, 2008 at 16:55 #187253Can’t see him beating Obama.

groan!
October 31, 2008 at 17:13 #187256having Ginger as a father he was probably never allowed to develop his language skills..words in edgeways springs to mind…try to keep an open mind about most people but find it impossible to like McCain senior..think his son is a far more pleasant sort of chap.
October 31, 2008 at 18:16 #187261What a fascinating and well conducted feature on Donald McCain by Nick Luck.
The hour long programme probably matched the interviewee – modest, unassuming, centering on events in Donald’s life and his thoughts & opinions on his current life. Nick Luck should be congratulated on extracting such detail and comment from Donald, who is clearly the antithesis of his father in terms of personality and training ability.I sat with my partner watching last evening, and whilst she has a growing interest in racing, she sat enthralled at the programme’s content and main character for the entire hour. (I’m sure she would have horse in training with McCain in a minute, given the chance!).
Racing TV on a different scale, plaudits to all involved at RUK.
October 31, 2008 at 18:34 #187265Agreed Crazy Horse
Very much a trainer to keep ‘on the right side’ and a likeable chap too
October 31, 2008 at 18:38 #187267Nick Luck is [hopefully] coming to the WMRC NH preview on 11 November in Birmingham….non members welcome.
October 31, 2008 at 20:32 #187282Very enjoyable programme and something which RUK does a good job in doing.
Donald Jnr will never be like his father as regards being outspoken and sexist but is still a good person in his own right.
Being born into the McCain family is probably a tough thing but certainly not as tough as being a child of the brand Beckham or Jackson families.
October 31, 2008 at 22:23 #187296Sorry Rory.

LMFAO!!! you’re a better trainer than his Dad was. The old man was near on useless as a trainer but the son is a totally different ball game. He was the luciest man on earth when Red Rum and Billy Ellison came along. Never had much time for Ginger McCain as a trainer or a man..the last I heard poor old Billy was on income support and could barely walk but he to many played a huge part in the succes of Red Rum.
I am amazed his sone has done so well and the days of immediately discarding any horse trained by McCain are well and truly over.
A case of "like father like son" being totally off the mark.
