Try getting a lazy horse round 4m at Hexham in heavy going without using the whip 16 times…. its a bloody stupid rule…..its how the whip is used that should be the issue, not how many times..March 28, 2009 at 14:38 #218831Absolutely stupid of the BHA to put a number of hits on the issue, Fitzgerald & Chapman yesterday highlighted the absurdity of it although Luke Harvey seemed to be under the impression that if you did it 17 you were guilty and 15 not guilty. How are jockeys meant to count to 16 during a race and are slaps down the neck counted?
Talk about shooting yourselves in the foot.March 28, 2009 at 14:45 #218834I think we have been down the route of the ‘lazy’ horse before. Personally, if all the other aids have been exhausted I can’t help but think if a horse needs to be hit sixteen or more times to ‘motivate’ it – whatever the distance – it shouldn’t be on a racecourse.
March 28, 2009 at 15:13 #218844I’m trying hard to bite my tongue Stilvi….. but i’m sorry that is complete and utter horse shite! Suggest you pick up Greyhound racing instead.
March 29, 2009 at 14:45 #219078I have only just heard of the new rule, after watching ATR this morning.
I cant believe they have come up with a number on the times a jockey is allowed to whip his/her mount. Is there any significance to the number 16, or is it one that they have picked out of a hat.
Are the jockeys meant to count during the race how many times they have administered the whip.
Absurd rule.
March 29, 2009 at 14:57 #219081The number of times a horse is hit (16) is only a guideline for the stewards to have a look it doesn’t mean there will be any action taken. I think the criticism is taking things out of proportion. It would be different if 16 strikes determined that action would be taken against a jockey but it doesn’t it doesn’t really mean anything.
March 29, 2009 at 14:57 #219082Pretty symptomatic of the world we now live in, isn’t it?
Logic and reasoning are out, ‘initiatives’ are in.
March 29, 2009 at 15:33 #219084Does this ruling apply thought-out a whole race or is it in addition to the current ‘reminders rule’ and applied only at the business end of a race so to speak?
If the latter and given the ruling that a horses should be given time to respond to the whip (i.e. only hit once ever two strides) the seemingly illogical/absurb figure of 16 seems about right.
March 29, 2009 at 15:36 #219085During the whole race pompete….hence the reaction of the jocks esp jump jocks….its a stupid rule to try and get the animal rights idiots on side….
I once had a to swat a wasp three times in order to kill it…..i fully expect a court order through the post any day now….
