There is no argument that Ruby Walsh is a supreme horseman but I have never been a big fan of his.
This goes back to the Irish Grand National of 2005 when riding Numbersixvalverde he passed his father’s horse Jack High on the run-in although the latter did have some compensation for this defeat when winning the Betfred[old Whitbread] cup later on in the season. His greed [imo] was highlighted again at the festival when he brought home American Triology. In hindsight it was obvious to all that the horse had been layed out for this race with the ease in which it won .The horse travelled like a dream all the way round then flew the last couple of furlongs to win by a wide margin.Im convinced that ANY jockey could have won on A.T.that day,so surely some of the lesser lights in the yard could have taken the ride….Sorry I just dont like the man, and a gun at my head would be the only persuader to follow him.
rant over cheers.
ps I see that there is another sea pidgeon [seepigeon]on the forum so Im going to reinvent myself as "rustneversleeps"if thats ok with the moderators
April 9, 2009 at 16:28 #221028I don’t really see any reason why Ruby should have given up either of those rides to be honest – he wants to ride winners and he does just that
He comes across as a bit surly at times IMO but you can’t fault his ability or will to win

The kind of utter drivel that gives forums a bad name ( in my opinion of course)
April 9, 2009 at 16:44 #221034Hi Bob,
You wrote a posting in the Lounge which could do with clarification. Not drivel exactly (at least in the technical sense), but debatable and lacking in empirical evidence. I’ve queried it.
Would you reply please? Cheers.

No
April 9, 2009 at 16:53 #221037Feel the same way as seapidgeon, to be honest, and I’m glad the subject was raised because I do question why and tend to beat myself about the head with it….can’t really pinpoint why I feel this way; I always think that in this country we somehow expect our top sportspeople to be ‘nice’, and tend to feel surprised if they do something that we don’t like…successful people tend to be very focussed and driven and don’t worry too much whose toes they step on in the process…[eg Lester Piggott].
April 9, 2009 at 17:14 #221045Well at least its not Sam Thomas thats being got at today.
I can see no point or sense or justification to the authors opening post "I just don’t like the man" – well Ok, fine but why start a topic with the intention of creating a chain reaction of Ruby bashing?
To reach the top you have to be driven and to a certain extent a bit ruthless, certainly tunnel visioned and dedicated. It may not be to everyones taste but so be it.
I would agree with the quote that Ruby "can be a bit surly at times" but he’s hardly Jack The Ripper is he?
Still, no one can be liked by everyone – Piggott, Fallon, Dettori, Walsh, McCoy – which one of them doesn’t have a critic?
April 9, 2009 at 17:25 #221049I’m confused.
So, let me get this straight, you think Ruby should’ve let Jack High win the Irish National because his father trained it.
If memory serves me well, Ruby literally starved himself to ride the promising Numbersixvalverde and gave the horse a smashing ride.
Discipline and desire – two things one must attain to be the best.
In my opinion, he’s the best big race pilot in the country and I wouldn’t swap him for anyone else, including AP.
Personally, I’ve never had a problem with the guy. Upon entering the winners enclosure at Cheltenham, his first action was, more often than not, to acknowledge his ‘Proud as Punch’ Father – no hard feelings there, it seems.
Greed? I watched a film not so long ago about the life of Baseball legend Ty Cobb. Fictional, or not, his final words to the reporter were something along the lines of "The desire for success is not a sin".
Couldn’t agree more.

April 9, 2009 at 17:50 #221056I personally dont give a monkeys what comes out Rubys mouth its his
skills in the saddle i care about and most of the time he is awesome!
re;- Kauto stars jumping!!April 9, 2009 at 19:12 #221074I couldn’t begin to describe how highly I regard Ruby Walsh.
For me Ruby is the ultimate horseman who conducts himself in an excellent manner.
Our Ruby gives the impression he doesn’t suffer fools glady but as Ian said that does not make him Jack the Ripper.
Greed! can’t be having that. He’s very very competitive and so he should be. All top sportsmen are and if they weren’t they wouldn’t be top sportsmen for long.
He was visibly upset after last years Gold Cup and was determined to prove Kauto Star was the best horse in the world yet you would have thought he was out having a morning stroll. Not one sign of panic on the day he was coolness personified.
I’m a million miles away from most of my old racing pals but still have the occasional chat with some of the lads and I have never known anyone to have anything but praise for the man.
The racing world is a very small place and if your unliked then everyone knows you are. That is not Ruby Walsh.
Ruby Walsh is one of the most poular jockeys ever to grace the turf. The cheers Ruby Ruby Ruby rang out at Cheltenham like Man United had just won the Champions League and Christy Moore had just ended singing the Ballad of Ruby Walsh all at the same moment.
People have the right to dislike anyone they choose but Our Ruby? As Colm Meaney said in the Commitments "That’s blasphemy that is!"

So you
were not
on American Trilogy but
was
on Jack High and then
wasn’t
….yeah, that’ll be about right I reckon.

how do you know?
hes never been caught has he?
Ruby can be a bit grumpy but i cant find any reason to dislike him at all as a sportsman. Ultimately, although sportsmans poersonalities will often come through in the way they play the game, a less than charming profile can produce great spectacle. Maradona (a true worm) Botham (bit of a bullying bore) etc etc
We are there to watch them…not have them round for a dinner party

Never trust a man with a pony tail or someone who can’t spell Sea Pigeon
April 9, 2009 at 22:19 #221100I feel more confident when Ruby Walsh is riding my selection.
Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
April 10, 2009 at 00:34 #221125Couldn’t knock Ruby for wanting to ride winners and he’s no more or less personable than many top sportsmen. A credit to his profession IMHO. Keep it up…
