Surprise, surprise !
Ruby Walsh has opted to ride Kauto Star in this year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup over Denman.
We all knew he would anyway.
I may be in the minority, but I think Sam Thomas is more suited to Denman in any case. His ride aboard the big horse in the Hennessy was near flawless.

as he said how can you get off a GC winner!!!
in he hennessy take nothing away from Thomas but that day i thought it was all about the horse
February 6, 2008 at 10:58 #140580Whole atrical is aload of Bollocks. Never at anytime has it entered the man’s head to get off Kauto Star. All this rubbish about syaing it was a difficult decision is Ruby being diplomatic about it. Can’t go offending people in his position.
He would be of the same mind after the Hennessy and was omly confirming what he already knew when he rode the horse in the Lexus.
Ruby went for him after the last to see what he had in reserve and the answer was not enough. He’s simply not good enough and Kauto will destroy him at Cheltenham there is just no comparing the two……Rediculous price for a horse who will do nothing more than provide Kauto with the strong gallop he has been crying out for. You want to back him wait until the day.
Everyone talks about how well Denman travels and for me his cruising speed would be no higher than Kautos. Kauto was going so well at Kempton he was in front 5 from home and the only thing Ruby had to do during the race was ask him to quicken to go though a gap approacing it. He simply anhialted them and Denman won’t be any different IMO.

I’ll get on to her indoors if you don’t rest this minute.

February 6, 2008 at 11:24 #140591Fist of Fury. Please calm down old son, please calm down. You’re making me nervous too.

For someone who seems so unworried by any threats to Kauto Star’s Cheltenham Gold Cup crown, you are trying hard not to show it.
Methinks you are slightly more concerned by the threat Denman poses than you are letting on.
What’s that old Shakespearian line about protesting too much.

Although there wasn’t much wrong with Ruby’s ride in last season’s RSA either.

I am not worried at al mate and those 2 sugar cubes I sent to Dermot Brown were for his tea………It’s all rumours
February 7, 2008 at 16:44 #140970Fist is right about one thing Ruby was always going to ride Kauto the rest is all not going to offend jargon.
I think Sam Thomas is quality and Denman’s chances won’t be affected by him riding.
As for who will win I’m still not convinced that Kauto is as good at 3m 2 1/2 furlongs off a fast pace, Denman I have less doubts about. If Kauto stays it properly he will win I think its that simple.
Paul Nicholls says he has no doubts but then when did I ever listen to any jockey / trainer?
