To our urban ears, the attitude of people from farming/rural backgrounds towards animals, such as Ruby Walsh expressed the other week, with regard to a horse that died under him, seems at best callous.

But it reminded me of an article in Sunday Supplement, written by Phil Drabble of ‘One Man and His Dog’ fame.

He grew up in a Yorkshire village, apparently. Anyway(s) [the ‘s’ being an optional suffix, if you’re American], he said his parents wanted him to become a doctor, but he said he hated people when they were well, so b*gger seeing them when they were sick.

He said the local lads hated him, too, and referred to him as ‘im as belongs to the lemon-eyed bitch’ – surely having a narrow perspective on dogs confined to working dogs, and not as pets. I expect Ruby would have found nothing odd about a person identifying a dog as both having ‘lemon eyes’ and being a bitch. Not having a shot at you, Rube!

It’s a bit of a dilemma isn’t it because if you like animals and spend most of your life having them as pets or working with them

the harder you tend to become because, at the end of the day the chances are you will outlive them. Of course, at the opposite end of the spectrum are the animal rights people who would have animals not exist at all because to exist is to be exploited.

Yes, it is. Like so much else in life, I think.
