What do people think about next years RSA chase or any other novice chasers. If Fingal Bay goes over fences he could just the type for the RSA and maybe Lovcen who beat him at aintree. Felix Younger and Boston Bob could also be big players for the Mullins stable.
September 25, 2012 at 11:25 #414149Backed Fingal Bay @ 14s last week with Boylesports, best price.
It took the grand sum of my £7 pls god knows what else for it to be cut to 10s later that evening !
September 25, 2012 at 12:45 #414161Your lucky they laid you G/l
October 13, 2012 at 16:53 #416591I’m also on fingal bay but not that impressed today, sound jumping though
October 13, 2012 at 20:34 #416616I think he won with a bit in hand today (as he should have done) but not sure a stiff 3 mile round Cheltenham is what he eventually wants.
October 13, 2012 at 20:52 #416623I’m looking to back Fingal Bay to win the Jewson and am awaiting a few prices from different bookmakers I’ve contacted.
I think he’s got far more speed than everyone seems to think. He was stylish today, looked a natural jumper, unsurprisingly got tired after the second last and had a very fair introduction to chasing. I think a strongly run 2m4f on a stiff track will suit him down to the ground, he has a high cruising speed and the ability to quicken off a fast pace. He does idle so I’d like to see him delivered late if possible at some point.
Very exciting horse.
October 14, 2012 at 16:26 #416717Pretty much most ante post bets have Fingal Bay and Boston Bob, coupled and thrown in. Both have the class and ability for this, and are streets ahead of their rivals imo. Built like staying chasers already.
October 14, 2012 at 22:53 #416764Boston Bob I fear may need soft ground to produce his best form. He didn’t strike me as an obvious RSA type either. Ruby, as with Denman, didn’t make enough use of him at Cheltenham, that’s for sure. I still think though that at this point in time, he’s overrated.
October 16, 2012 at 17:35 #416958Early pointer at Punchestown tomorrow as Lyreen Legend, Mount Benbulben, Sword of Destiny and The Westerner Boy go toe to toe over 2m 4f.
October 31, 2012 at 14:20 #418764No idea if this race is being considered but Buckers Bridge made a decent start today. Quite fortunate to get the win but showed a good attitude and should be even better when stepped up in distance. Gap to the third a fair indication the race was above average.
November 11, 2012 at 18:59 #419668Have taken 10s about Fingal Bay for the Jewson as not totally sure Hobbs likes the RSA as much but does regularly go for theJewson and whatever race he goes for he starts a whole lot shorter
November 16, 2012 at 13:34 #420002It appears bookmakers may have overreacted to Dynaste. Clearly goes well fresh but limited history suggests quite a question mark as to whether he can sustain a season. Fingal Bay pretty much had the run of the race but looked painfully slow.
November 19, 2012 at 19:53 #420340The odds compilers at Coral sometimes take a view on a big race and it looks like they are doing so with the RSA next March. They offer 20/1 about Saturday’s Punchestown winner, Back In Focus. Big mistake, I think.
He is just half that price with Bet 365 and is generally a 14/1 chance. He’s won both his steeplechases; Saturday’s race was a pretty strong one and although the ground was heavy, he had the smoothest action of the four runners suggesting that he will go at least as well if not better on good ground. I suspect it’s not so much soft ground he needs as a true stamina test.
On that front, my only reservation on the ante-post front is that he might end up in the 4m National Hunt Chase, although his trainer, Willie Mullins, said after Saturday’s race that the RSA trip would suit him well. If he ends up in the four-miler, well you can back him to recover your lost stake for the RSA.
In action, he looks a proper stayer: a head-down rhythmic galloper and an economical relaxed jumper. He made one error on Saturday, otherwise he fenced like an old handicapper and better ground should only help his technique. He reminded me a bit of Denman. Like that horse, he seems to give a lot in his races without any driving and I suspect he would want a fair rest between runs.
But take the 20/1 before Coral realise they’ve made a bloomer.
Good luck
Joe
November 19, 2012 at 22:53 #420355Back In Focus is one of the most obvious soft ground lovers in training. He would need a quagmire to have any chance in an RSA – I would suggest Corals appreciate that and 20/1 isn’t at all generous.

Take a look at his action – it’s one of a horse who’d prefer decent ground. His trainer believes he wants better ground. He’s run only once on good and just 5 times under rules so there’s little evidence to back up your certainty.
What he needs is a stamina test.

I am aware of his action. If the trainer has suggested he wants better ground presumably he means soft rather than heavy. Yes, he does want a stamina test but much more than is afforded by the RSA on anything like the ground usually associated with the Festival. Personally, I think it is long odds about him even starting let alone winning.
December 7, 2012 at 15:15 #421907Assuming he is none-the-worse for that incident, Fingal Bay could be a better value proposition now. He obviously didn’t enjoy being in front or going right-handed.
Medermit ran out in his novice season but still ran well at Cheltenham, so I hope we can draw a line under this too.
