as a newcomer to the forum i feel i must contribute something with regard to systems. here is an ideal way to reduce field size numbers for anyone who likes to perm horses for placepot purposes.
by combinig the rpr of any horse to its fineform rating gives you a numerical figure that incorperates its overall form (rpr) and its current form (fineform). where 2 horses come out with an identical figure i take the one with course form. here is how it fared at ayr today…….
2.20 internationalguest 95 (unplaced) / azure mist 87 (unplaced) / lady sorcerer 86 (2nd 16/1)
2.50 yungaburra 116 (unplaced) word perfect 113 (unplaced) divine spirit 108 (won 7/1)
3.30 upton grey 101 (3rd) cape vale (won 11/2) rubirosa (2nd) NICE TRICAST!!
4.05 captain gerrard 123 (won 5/6) kylayne 117(unplaced) romantic destiny 112 (unplaced)
4.40 sundea 120 (3rd) sunrise safari 117 (4th) imperial echo112 (unplaced)
5.15 wigwam willie 103 (won 4/1) robemma 103 (unplaced) emerald bay 103( unplaced)
5.50 great quest 89 (unplaced) tangible 89 (unplaced) balakar 88 (won 11/2). to perm 3 horses per race will prove costly but todays placepot was 1,700 pound so it isnt impossible, chipmunkSeptember 21, 2007 at 18:09 #115842Fantastic stuff chipmunk – welcome to the forum.
September 21, 2007 at 20:33 #115871excuse me for being neive but what is fineform?
September 21, 2007 at 20:37 #115873There are a few versions of fineform, maybe chipmunk will tell us which one he is using, welcome to the forum chipmunk.
September 22, 2007 at 05:12 #115905fineform (at least the version i use is as follows)
look at any horses last 2 runs if it won 5 points second is 3 points third is 2 points fourth is 1 point. a course winner 1 point a disatnce winner 2 points, a course AND distance winner 3 points. add the numbers for its last 2 runs and any c+d points to give its numerical value. some people then add points for weight (ie 1 point for every pound below topweight) but i find this gives an overly biased advantage to lower weighted horses.a regular critisism of fineform is that it makes no allowance for class after all in a 2 horse race which one would you back……….horse 1) form lines 11….horse 2) form lines 00.( both horses carrying an identical weight). its a gimme that horse one is best……….but horse 1 won 2 selling races by a short head and horse 2 was fifth twice in group races………hhhhmmm. kinda puts a different perspective on it. to cancel that i incorperate the rpr for each horse as this includes its overall form, chipmunkSeptember 22, 2007 at 05:34 #115906here are the top 3 for ayr today………how many times do we research a system only for it to flat on its face when the money is down……..
ayr 1.50 mizooka 101 / bencoleen 101 / joinedupwriting 99
ayr 2.20 unilateral 124 / loch jipp 117 / lady deauville 116
ayr 2.50 mutajarred 120 / royal dignitary 111 / fremen 110
ayr 3.30 indian trial 137 / beaver patrol 132 / pearly wey 131
ayr 4.05 grimes faith 109 / stonehaugh 107 / imperial echo 107
ayr 4.40 group captain 137 / confidential lady 136 / anna pavlova 135.
just giggling to myself my each way banker today is anna pavlova, how ironic if that one knocked me out in the last leg………chipmunkSeptember 22, 2007 at 07:01 #115909very interesting indeed. Im sure this could be incorporated into my system which already takes into account RPR and class and whilst I already use the previous 3 races an addtional form rating always helps.
welcome to the forum by the way
September 22, 2007 at 07:56 #115911Your maximum fineform rating is then 13 points .. I used to do this with the Mirror ratings plus fineform. It does work but there are losing runs.
It will be interesting to see how you get on over time with this chipmunk.
September 22, 2007 at 08:03 #115912yes dave the maximum points would be 13, a horse that has won its last 2 and is also a c+d winner. when i first read about fineform i thought it was the golden elixiar to racing but i went over 5 years of racing and it isnt a system to use blindly. i wont bore with the details but the only regular profit (using fineform alone) was 2 1/2 mile handicap chases for some bizarre reason and races where a horse scored 13 and was the only winner last time out, i only use it in conjunction with other factors now for placepots, chipmunk
September 22, 2007 at 08:52 #115918The fineform system is pretty good, because you might not win much but you won’t lose much either. The problem with putting it together with something like RPR is the the last two runs are already taken into account. It is in a clumsy way assessing a form rating with another form rating, if you know what I mean? It might sit better with a speed rating, because these don’t always equate to recent form. Horses that won LTO and are the only horse in the race that won LTO are good bets.
September 22, 2007 at 13:01 #115968never fails…………first time the moolah goes on ……..out first race, the joys of racing lol chipmunk

There’s always tomorrow.
September 22, 2007 at 19:28 #116016anna pavlova…………..my placepot was down (4/6) but anna saves the day,chipmunk
September 23, 2007 at 08:26 #116064Hi Chipmunk
The RPR + Fineform is a decent method of finding selections quickly, but as already mentioned it suffers from many weaknesses.
I’ve been along this road and I would encourage you to continue your journey, as you will gain a lot from the experience.
At the end of this road, you may realise that the travelling was much more interesting than your destination.
Bon Chance,
September 23, 2007 at 10:17 #116075I developed a system in the late 80’s based on Fineform following some extensive data analysis.
Basically it involved two year old conditions races (the better the class of race the better the system worked. You went for top rated provided it had won over the distance and going previously and was <10> than odds on. Had some good wins, most notably Rock City in the Coventry which paid for most of my first house deposit.
It worked spectacularly for several seasons but seemed to run out of steam around 1993! Just as I’d built up a decent bank which, alas, all found it’s way back to the coffers of the bookies. Don’t quite understand yet why things changed. It could have been as simple as the probabilities/stats ‘catching up’ with the system (the system evolved from backfitting various systems and these do have a habit of running out of puff) or changes in race conditions (if I recall correctly the shape of 2-y-o racing altered slightly with the introduction of the ‘novice stakes’ class of race). Anyway, I’ll dig out the info/rules and start a topic to see how this system does from now til the end of the season.
September 23, 2007 at 18:42 #116129imagine winning a deposit on house in this day and age?
November 8, 2007 at 18:15 #123638Here is a way fineform may be used:
Award points for each of the last two races.
won ……………. 5 pts
Second ………..3 pts
Third ………….. 2 pts
Fourth ………… 1 pointCourse win add …….. 1 point
Distance win add ….. 2 pointsEach star in the Sporting Life Star ratings add ……. 1 point.
Possible maximum points = 18 points.
Best horse = most points -
