So day 3 into this 5 day marathon of top class racing comes to the main event of the week, The Gold Cup
Now if you live in Ayr or Cheltenham then the Gold Cup is one of two different races but for the flat it is the 2m4f Group One and the premier event for the stayers in Europe and indeed the World.
Yeats looks like all he has to do turn up and have a gentle canter around but with the price being short then maybe some value needs to be found.
Regal Flush placed in the John Porter and the Yorkshire Cup is a winner over 1m6f and could benefit from the step up to 2m4f and is good ew value 16-1 and will give you a good run for your money.
Coastal Path is a top french stayer even more than Carla Bruni and his class will be on show at the business side of the race and will be in contention and would be the one with Yeats for the forecast.Michita is well regarded for the Ribblesdale but it is a case of has the Oaks run took a lot out of her and if it has then it may be worth looking for another filly to have your £1 on.
Dar Re Mi who was 3rd in the Musidora and could be a Park Hill type may be a tentative choice and should run a sound race having bypassed Epsom to come to Ascot.
The Brittania is a miss for me but a race to note any good horses for the future.
In the Hampton Court which like the Britt has a lot of unexposed 3yo and Cricket fan SMS may want Kensington Oval to make it 2 not out in this race and one of his 2 owners the Duke of Devonshire would want to have a winner at the meeting and he could do well.
Unnefer who ran 2nd to Tajaaweed at Chester would bring the brand new Grandstand down (which some people would probably like to see happen) if he won for Henry Cecil and give him another Royal Ascot winner.
That is my look for day 3, Have not done all the races as i have only looked at the races that I am interested in.
Amazingly i still have not had a bet this week at Royal Ascot but i am not all that bothered as like the Euros without England i have been enjoying the quality racing and seeing very good horses.
June 18, 2008 at 21:34 #169157Fiulin ismy biggest bet of the week in the King George V handicap. He was edged out by a very well handicapped horse in Enroller last time despite looking the winner for much of the way, McEvoy notr getting to the bottom of him. A stronger pace should see him in better light.
June 18, 2008 at 21:57 #169161I backed Collection for the Derby immediately after his victory at York, so will be having plenty of anything around the forecast 8/1, and South Central looks like a star sprinter in the making following a devastating debut performance at Carlisle (time was extremely good).
Those two, and maybe Changing Skies in the Ribblesdale (I’ve had a quick look at the Britannia and am drawn to Yaddree, but that’s on a brief five-minute flick through the form).

June 18, 2008 at 22:17 #169164Coastal Path for me in the Gold Cup, I wonder if Yeats is quite as good as before. Le Miracle did me a good e/w turn last year, but hasn’t run very well in his two outings this season, but at least stays every yard of the 2 1/2 miles.
Btw, please can we call it "Gold Cup Day" rather than "Ladies Day"?
June 18, 2008 at 22:27 #169166I’ll be very interested to see South Central again, his maiden peformance looked mightily impressive on both grass and paper. I’m usually very cautious in these races (my jumps pedigree struggles to trust a field so collectively unexposed) but I’ll be taking a half-decent wedge of 7/2 tomorrow.
There’s two others I quite like the look of: Michita deserves another chance IMO (she really didn’t like Epsom and still ran respectably) and is more than fairly priced now. I also think Pampas Cat has a fighting chance in the Hampton Court. He was beaten by Unnefer LTO, but given the weight he now receives and the likelihood of a stronger pace (which should suit given his Chester Vase form) he has the opportunity to turn the tables quite easily, which should put him right in the mix.
June 19, 2008 at 00:08 #169171If the ground remains good-to-firm, which it should given the weather reports, then Yeats is a certainty for the Gold Cup. If, however, some rain does arrive and offers up ground on the good side (or slower), then Coastal Path will likely be backed off the boards.
June 19, 2008 at 01:05 #169172I don’t know who I want to win the Gold Cup.
Have a good ante-post bet on Coastal Path, but if I am to win the Tote Ten To Follow competition I need Yeats to win.
Certainly would not back Yeats at current price. Now seven, did not need to be at his best on reappearance, can not be certain he is as good nowadays. Has never faced a stayer as good as Coastal Path.Mark

will back yeats to winJune 19, 2008 at 10:08 #169211I’m going to have a very speculative punt on Sagara in the Gold Cup. I can’t fathom why Godolphin have entered him in this race at all. Never raced further than 12f and never raced on anything better than good ground. Disappointed LTO and Frankie is on the other stable horse. There’s just something about this entry that my subconscious is nagging me to back him.
Either that or it’s just pure stupidity!
June 19, 2008 at 10:21 #169215Godolphin did the same with Papineau, David, although they did take in the Henry II over 2m en route.
A pound a length at a mile, marble?
Having looked at the Britannia a little more thoroughly, I’m hoping that Yaddree can set the race up for Throne Of Power. He won really well over 7f at Doncaster in mid-May, comfortably beating Firestreak with the pair well clear, and is sure to be suited by the step up in trip. There is pace on the far side, Mikael Magnusson is a trainer I very much like and I think he could be a fair bit better than his handicap mark of 95.
I’ve switched by allegiance to Michita in the Ribblesdale too, having replayed both the Oaks and her demolition of subsequent winner Rosa Grace at Goodwood (Rosa Grace was given an appalling ride that day by Chris Catlin, but was put well in her place anyway).
June 19, 2008 at 10:35 #169218Coastal Path has never run more than two miles I’m informed

Sagara is a lazy s..
The type to stay further than it’s pedigree.
Also, the type to show nothing at home, may be he is better than they think?
Then again may be he is a dog.

Value Is EverythingJune 19, 2008 at 11:14 #169227Indian Days has been aimed at this race (King George) all season, 9lb rise is fair enough and 22’s is a working mans price.
June 19, 2008 at 11:33 #169231Endless Luck is a NR
June 19, 2008 at 12:12 #169241He was beaten surprisingly easily, wasn’t he? After Walter Swinburn’s comments on the BBC, and given how well the horse was backed (50/1 in places in the morning into a general 25/1), I was reasonably hopeful.
I tend to work to 3lb per length over 5-7f, 2lb per length over 8-10f and a pound per length at 12f or further, but I don’t know that it’s an exact science.
I guess I’ll have to cross every crossable part of my body now that you’re backing Throne Of Power, marble, we’ll need the luck!
