Perhaps it is just me – but does the show really have to waste so much time analysing how much time horses spent jumping? For example, did we really need some spreadsheet geeks to tell us that Edwardstone lost ground to Jonbon at the Railway fences in last Saturday’s Tingle Creek? Anyone with a pair of eyes in their head could see that.

Plenty of time is wasted on such rubbish, treated by Lydia and Ruby as if the Rosetta Stone has just been solved. But are we really any the wiser?

It’s the way analysis is going in all sports these days, CAS. An over reliance on figures and statistics… as we know, numbers never lie.

Agree Glad. In some ways, punters have never had it so good. Able to watch every race in Britain and Ireland in their own home and more options on how to bet.

But there is lots more information now and I am not convinced it is all helpful. Does it really help us to back more winners?

In previous series, the “Road” has just reviewed the week’s racing and tried to identify some antepost bets. Now it looks like it is trying to show off how clever it is but to my mind it is over-analysing the obvious, for no one’s benefit.

I actually thought it was quite informative.

I like Ruby’s analysis on races and it was interesting but I could do without it. There is such a thing as over analysing.

Agree RTB. What are all the fancy graphs telling us we don’t already know?

Jonbon jumped better and travelled more strongly than Edwardstone? Thanks Mr Einstein!

Ruby Walsh has so much to offer from a jockeys point of view and knows the courses well as well as a lot of the Mullins horses etc. His insight can be very good. I haven’t watched any of the “Road to Cheltenham” I have them saved and may watch them nearer the time

Let’s just suppose for a moment that Ruby Walsh really is the analytical genius those who hang on his every word crack him up to be.

Literally every thought in his head is in the public domain – there is no edge whatsoever to be had from heeding his words as every odds compiler, every exchange trader and every punter can hear what he thinks too and it’s factored into the market.

I’ve taped them and will start watching them on my new VCR soon. You should consider that too, Nathan.

I don’t think I’ve ever backed a horse put up by TV or Racingpost pundits, in fact if
I’ve picked out one and then see that Pricewise has put it up, it’s like the kiss of
    death.

I get the Racingpost online every day, but just for the information on rides/pedigree
and watching previous races. Even trainers or owners are always on the positive side.
Trainers can hardly say “this is a complete plug of a horse and couldn’t win at the bingo”
The only inkling you might hear is that it will come on for the race. I’ve seen them win
too with the trainer giving it “well I didn’t see that coming”.

“If my horse is down, it’s because of me, nobody else.”

    LOVE this.^

And to me, that’s where the real edge comes from, having got to know the game yourself over the years, being able to form an independent view and act on it.

Only BigG knows what BigG thinks – it’s not broadcast into the public domain – and hence it does not affect the market and value can still be had.

No one gets it right all the time, but, unless you have a steady flow of accurate stable inside information, backing your own opinions is the only way to win in the long run at this game.

And it’s also infinitely more satisfying.

I agree wholeheartedly. Most of my punting is based on my own eyes and ears and is a matter of perception and instinct, rather than the detailed analysis the Road seems to be going in for now.

But Hislop and Walsh are both good judges and I will listen to what they have to say. I just think in this current series of the Road they are placing too much emphasis on detailed data analysis which is not really telling us anything of value.

Angus McNae is banging on about the Race IQ data now.

    Yawn.

Yes, he was in a frenzy of excitement about it all yesterday. He breathlessly told us the winner of the first race at Cheltenham had “a finishing speed percentage of 107.2%”.

The thought our own eyes could have told us a mare that travelled well, winged every hurdle and pulled clear up the run in might be above average did not seem to occur to him.

I don’t mind that jumping data; remember this isn’t Flat racing, there is a technical element to the sport – namely jumping cleanly & efficiently……A race might be lost/ won through poor jumping, and not just having a bigger engine…..

I can picture Dave Nevison, sat at the opposite end of the studio from McNae, rolling his eyes in disdain.

    Ditto

I saw ITV got involved in the this rubbish on Friday. You’ve got to wonder why and what percentage of their viewers will be interested in this tripe. Can’t see many new viewers being attracted by it.
