The rivalry between Kauto Star and Denman is really fascinating and is certainly increasing the hype for the GC on the 14th of March.
I recorded ATR yesterday, as I was working and watched when I got home and there was an interesting interview with Harry Findlay. He thinks KS will not truely stay the GC distance if it’s run at a decent pace and obviously he’s talking up the chances of Denman beating KS. It just seemed strange to watch the interview, as both horses are from the same stable and I’ve never seen this type of rivalry from the same stable before, normally it’s owners from different stables that try and pick what might be chinks in their rivals armour. I wonder what PN thinks about it? He was interviewed yesterday as well by ATR and he is in disagreement and definitely thinks KS stays and says that it will take some performance to beat KS in the GC. You know he will not come out and say it, but you get the feeling he thinks KS is the better horse. It just seemed a bit uncomfortable watching both interviews knowing that both horses are from the same stable. Has there been this sort of rivalry between horses from the same stable before? Whatever the outcome of the GC, I’m sure PN will be very happy whichever one wins, as he can’t lose and hopefully when they go head to head both horses come back safe and sound. It’s great to have 2 horses like Kauto Star and Denman around!February 17, 2008 at 10:09 #144064Ide love to see something else beating these 2,dont care who, think the horses are great absolute machines but its all the crap you get from the press(wonder when the yard last bought toilet roll?) its sickening!!!!!!!
And Findlay shouting 30-100 what great value it was(yes if youve got a spare £50,000) your run of the mill punter couldnt touch that!
Have the irish got something still picking grass in a field that could turn them over?…probably not
February 17, 2008 at 10:12 #144065i guess the outside bet for the irish is KK – they can’t do the fake injury to push his price out again so this year they’re just running some crap races beforehand so they can get some 50s on him ….. stranger things have happened, you couldn’t trust ’em financially could you ?
February 17, 2008 at 10:21 #144068I doubt whether Nichols minds any of this at all. Possibly quite enjoying it and hes too professional to such any bias
February 17, 2008 at 10:25 #144070Paul Nicholls probably won’t mind it at all, as the publicity is all good for the stable and it’s win win all the way. There must be owners falling over themselves to try and get a horse in training with him!
February 17, 2008 at 10:29 #144072I think Mr Findlay is dead right, if, and that is IF there is a flaw in Kauto it is his stamina. He might be emphasising the point to Paul Nicholls that he wants Thomas to set a true / strong pace.
Value Is EverythingFebruary 17, 2008 at 10:55 #144078Forgive me for the ignorance – I read in an online Racing Post about PN being more excited about another horse other than Kauto Star and Denman. Was this simply media propaganda or is there something bigger to come in the PN yard?
February 17, 2008 at 10:56 #144079Probably that horse that won round Newbury.
February 17, 2008 at 12:02 #144098I think that was more ‘on the day’ excitement, MDeering, with the prospect of Master Minded beating Voy Por Ustedes at Newbury.
As for the rivalry in Paul Nicholls’s stable – it’s not exactly a bad position to be in, is it? I’m a huge fan of Kauto Star, much like the rest of the racing population, but I don’t just want him to win so as to cement himself as one of the best chasers in the last 30 years; I want him to win to shut Harry Findlay up. He’s a throughly unlikeable man, and watching him celebrate Gold Cup victory would be as unbearable as watching Alex Ferguson celebrate another Manchester United last-minute fluke.

That would be Noland who hopefully runs in the Arkle. Highly unlikely he will be a Gold Cup future winner but a very exciting prospect all the same.
Ruby did say he would win anywhere from 2 miles to 3 miles but he’s not really bred to stay any further than 2m4f so 3m2f could be beyond him.

I was listening to a radio programme yesterday and they had some racing guy on. He was speaking about this match and came away with a statement that I myself have touted for the last 12 months. "This Kauto Star is th best horse to be seen on a racecourse since Arkle"
People are beginning to realize that we may just be about to see something we may never get a chance to see again. "The Perfect Chaser".
Racing enthusiasts dreamabout opportunities to see that very special animal who is head and shoulders above everything else. A true champion.
To make it even more interesting their is a young pretender who in the eyes of many may be even better than him. If he had to beat Kauto out of sight he would be instantly hailed as the greatest Steeple chaser of all time. I would be amzed if he did but the fact remains we are on the verge of an epic battle and which ever horse comes out on top no doubt be regarded up there with the best ever.
You on the otherhand want to see them both get beat…….God your a miserable bunch of bones
please tell me your joking

No I believe it was Twist Magic. That was definatly thier view before the start of the season anyway. How long ago did you read this?
February 17, 2008 at 13:09 #144123Hey Fists!!!!!!
I think the horses are great(both machines) its just all the media licking PN’S arse almost at the stage”ill have your babies Paul”
Out of the 2 ide like to see Denman win as i think Sam Thomas is a fantastic young jockey.

I know FoF. Amazing, isn’t it!?
If racing enthusiasts can’t get excited over this, then stop following the sport. This is something that we will never see again for a long time. Those of you who watched Get On! this morning will know that Harry Findlay is seriously trying to talk Paul Barber into running Denman in the Grand National next year, so it’s possible he may not even run in the 2009 Gold Cup.
If another animal were to win the Cheltenham showpiece, that’s fine with me. Right now, I’m dreaming of an epic battle between Kauto Star and Denman, with a possible cameo from Exotic Dancer.
Better to have dreamed than to have never dreamed at all.

Personally I would lve to kick the man in the balls for opening his silly mouth without consulting a vet…PN not Sam….he had half the punters in the world up all night

Sam is an excellent jockey with a hige future ahead of him….wouldn’t be within a million miles of Kauto, Denman &co.
Unfortunately for him there’s a better Jockey and a better horse in the way. I think he and Denman’s owners will be wishing he was born in a different decade after Cheltenham.
The media? you said it all
