Eddie Fremantle does not appear very much on RTV nowadays, which probably explains his absence from the top six.

I find it surprising that Martin Dixon is top of the pundits list. Top six is understandable but not sure he is the best. And his habit of saying “If I’m being honest” all the time is a bit annoying. If I’m being honest.

The most surprising thing is seeing Tom Stanley as high up as third on the presenter list. I do not see what he contributes. Is he really better than Gary O’Brien?

I know their own employees came out on top but surprised Racing tv are giving air to a poll like that on their website. I wonder do they keep as close an eye on the critical polls or observations made online as well ?

Tom Stanley on RTV just before the opening race at Newmarket: “Adnaan is 5/4 from 6/5 and shortening up all the time.”

To be fair, one has a six in it and the other has a five.

    Easy mistake to make.

If you’re an idiot, that is.

Stanley is playing a blinder today. After Eileendover won at Newmarket, he opined “That is her first win since she won a listed race over hurdles at Market Rasen.” It was a bumper.

CAS – are they all on the idiot juice today? The RP Live Feed boldly stated that Pam Sly should stick to the flat with Eileendover, as she had shown she didn’t jump well over hurdles. The same Eileendover who has only raced in NH Bumpers or flat races.

It has always been a feature of television that, due to the visual nature of the medium, some get employed because of the image they present on the screen rather than what actually comes out of their mouths.

Sports commentators tend to be the exception, as you seldom see them on screen.

I’ve met Tom Stanley, really nice chap, always impeccably dressed, very affable and I can see why he gets work.

But on specialist channels I’d say viewers expect more in the way of knowledge.

Maybe I was a bit unfair to Tom Stanley yesterday. I suppose he is there as a presenter rather than as an expert pundit. I just thought those two mistakes were fairly basic, although I have never had to present a live television broadcast with a producer yapping in my ear.

He is by no means the only one. I have never really understood what Nick Lightfoot brings to the table either. Neither of them strikes me as having any more knowledge than an average racing fan and seem like a better fit for ITV than for a specialist channel.

Tom Stanley would probably be more comfortable doing something like The Social Stable on ITV Racing where he’d ironically be earning more money while having a less demanding audience.

It’s actually more difficult keeping viewers happy on the specialist channels.

That’s why I admire and respect Lydia Hislop for being just about the only person I can think of in racing who ever turned their back on a terrestrial TV job because they’d rather do a more serious channel for less money.

I recall Lydia being on the BBC for a short period. The hourly rate was presumably better, but I wonder if the infrequent nature of the work meant it wasn’t actually that lucrative. Perhaps she also sensed which way the BBC’s racing coverage was headed.

Lydia Hislop is younger than me – most people are! – and I remember her as a trainee journalist on The Sporting Life back in the day.

I didn’t know her at all well, but it always seemed to me that she was intelligent, enthusiastic, very hard working, earnest – took it all incredibly seriously – and wanted to the best journalist she could be every single day and learn and improve every single day.

She was also incredibly polite and respectful to literally everyone around her, even those who perhaps didn’t warrant that level of respect.

She was a person I thought it was impossible for anyone to dislike.

After I left racing journalism I was pleased to observe from outside her climb through the ranks because I thought it was well deserved.

I suspect she didn’t take to the kind of dumbed-down coverage Clare Balding seemed to advocate so she turned her back on the BBC, preferring RacingUK which covered racing the way she thought it should be covered.

I can’t ever remember anyone else putting principle ahead of money in the racing game so if my guess is correct she has my respect for that.

The Great Man is part of the Boat Race coverage now.

I think either Oxford or Cambridge will win. 😉

Snap CAS, I noticed that both Rishi and Claire Balding had appeared on the Boat Race coverage. They are like dog shite, they are everywhere!

I’m really hoping Rishi is straight over on a Jet-ski at the finish, right in to the winning posh boys faces, loudly asking “how does it feel?”.

Got to hand it to Andrew Cotter and his commentary team. A “race” which was decided in the first 20 seconds but they tried their best to keep it exciting for 15 minutes.
