One of the very best sadly passed away last night. Was at the top when I first got into racing. Shame he never transferred it to the training ranks.
RIP to one of the greats..
November 10, 2015 at 09:52 #1220976sad sad news,i briefly got to know pat back in 80s,he gave me the silks that he wore when winning on dancing brave at ascot.Had a lovely evening at Bedford Lodge hotel with him.
I knew he was having problems but this has came as a shock,a lovely lovely man and a great jockey toRIP Pat
November 10, 2015 at 10:38 #1220979Terribly sad news.
RIP
November 10, 2015 at 10:47 #1220980obviously the ride on Dancing Brave is a great ride, but one that sticks in my memory is his ride Celeric to win the Yorkshire cup back in the 90s.
November 10, 2015 at 11:41 #1220992I completely agree that one of the greats has gone.
When I got into racing it was the (Sir) Henry Cecil, Pat Eddery, Khalid Abdullah connection that captured my attention. I followed these three men religiously during my embryonic years following the sport.
We will never forget this… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9gDKdZ3qzA …Eddery gives the go on Zafonic.
RIP, Sir
This guy is a machine. All he does is work out and pick winners. Talk about fit. You should see him without his shirt off, serious side of beef.
November 10, 2015 at 12:51 #1220999A little too late getting into the sport to see the best of Pat Eddery. But was shocked to hear of his passing at a relatively young age. RIP Pat.
November 10, 2015 at 14:39 #1221006One of the all time great jockeys, and apparently a lovely bloke to go with it.
His achievements in the saddle speak for themselves.
Produced some of the greatest rides that I have ever seen. Picking one out is impossible Grundy. Posse, Dancing Brave, Pebbles all master classes.
R.I.P. sir, you will never be forgotten.
Sympathy and best wishes to all his family and those he leaves behind.November 10, 2015 at 14:53 #1221007So sorry to hear this news, RIP one of the greatest jockeys ever.
November 10, 2015 at 15:18 #1221014How strange to be watching Lester on YouTube the other night win the BC at the age of 59, and to wake up to this sad news.
I had the good fortune of being around for all of his career and can still recall the excitement of him coming on the scene as such a talented apprentice. He and P Walwyn were a powerful team.
Condolences to his family
November 10, 2015 at 17:22 #1221017Condolences to the whole Eddery family on their devastating loss – another part of my racing childhood gone way too soon.
Together with Lester Piggott, Willie Carson, Joe Mercer and Steve Cauthen they span the decades from the 60s through to the mid to late 90’s (in Eddery’s case) for what can be called the golden period of jockeys. It is hard to imagine that from 1964 through to 1991 one of those five men were the only ones to hold the title of Champion Jockey and the fact that Eddery sits alongside the maestro Piggott on 11 titles (more than the other three men’s totals combined) tells you all you need to know about his riding ability.
All the great rides that we have witnessed through his career with the obvious ones springing to mind like Dancing Brave’s Arc, Pebbles in Champion Stakes and Breeders Cup Turf, at his strongest on Jupiter Island in the Japan Cup and Zafonic 2000g etc
However, the one that always stuck out in my mind (due in small part also to Graham Goode’s commentary) was Rainbow Quest’s win in 1985 Coronation Cup, without a doubt Eddery at his cheekiest – poor Rae Guest, I always wondered to this day what Pat actually said to him as he breezed on by.
November 10, 2015 at 17:57 #1221029Really sad news. I started working in the bookies in 1984 and Pat was the man for the rest of that decade (and some way into the 90’s). He was definitely the punters favourite. Was at Epsom for that Coronation Cup and had backed the forecast as I was an “Old Country” fan.
RIP PatNovember 10, 2015 at 17:58 #1221030Lovely post, LD and a great clip
November 10, 2015 at 18:06 #1221031Very sad news indeed. A great jockey.
November 10, 2015 at 20:18 #1221049One of the greats, took over as the number one jockey from Lester, and it stayed that way for years
November 10, 2015 at 20:51 #1221056Incredible how one so brilliant in the saddle couldn’t transfer those big times to the Training ranks.Pat was an enigma,he came across as quite an ignorant character on the Racecourse and yet was the life and soul of the party off it.I was lucky enough to be a total obsessive to the Khaled Abdulla horses of the 80’s and 90’s and Pat was retained rider for those brilliant years.I still slate him for getting beat on Bellotto in the 2000gns but forgave him the day he landed my biggest priced Ante-Post Derby winner in Quest for Fame at 50/1.Pats life wasn’t unlike Sir Henrys, both enjoyed the good times to the full,Women included but both fell from grace big time, sadly Pat never got the chance to rise again like his old Boss.I rated him the best jockey to have in a finish but Steve Cauthen could steal a lead from Pat and he’d be forever trying to reel the lost ground in and failing behind the Yank, that frustrated him.Sad day but one to reflect on his brilliance and his best ever ride was on Dancing Brave in the Arc,a day I will never forget.RIP Pat you were a true Racing legend.
November 10, 2015 at 21:57 #1221062When I first got into racing in the early/mid 70s Lester was at his peak and was, and I suppose always will be, my ultimate jockey-hero. But not far behind was Pat Eddery, young and taking the racing world by storm, riding for the most powerful stable in England at the time and, aboard horses like Patch and Grundy, captured my imagination.
I was there that day Rainbow Quest won the Coronation Cup (only my second day’s racing after having been at the Derby the day before) and I remember him winning it as clearly as if it were yesterday. The Arc win was a great ride, but how many countless great rides did he give to horses over the years.
Very, very sad to hear of his passing and sad to think how unhappy his life had become. Condolences to his loved ones and RIP P.Eddery, a legend of our time.
November 10, 2015 at 22:25 #1221069Very shocked to hear the news. One of the all time greats. So many great memories but my favourite will always be the day he rode Bosra Sham to beat Halling in the ’96 Champion. I have never heard a roar like the one from the crowd that day. RIP Pat.
"this perfect mix of poetry and destruction, this glory of rhythm, power and majesty: the undisputed champion of the world!!!"
