Heard tonight from Toby Balding some sad news of his Champion Hurdle winner Beech Road had died yesterday morning. 50/1 winner of the Champion Hurdle reached the grand old age of 29.

Only seems like yesterday I was seeing him win the hurdle at Aintree; what a fantastic retirement he must have had.

Salute to a great character – as I recall Beech Road nearly died after a bad fall (the screens were round) but fortunately he got up, and proceeded to go and win the Champion Hurdle not so long afterwards!

Very sad to hear that. I’m sure that he had a great retirement. As Pinza rightly says the screens were put around him after a fall in a novice chase, and a couple of months later he had won the Champion Hurdle and followed up at Aintree.
    R.I.P. old boy
