Was just going start the same topic but you beat me to it!
Phillip Carberry’s was caught napping by BG. I know he is a hold up horse but was given way too much to do. I wouldnt be happy if i had backed Sublimity
April 25, 2008 at 16:42 #159833on the other hand great ride by BG (speaking from pocket obviously)
April 25, 2008 at 17:10 #159843It’s impossible to say, marb, given that Philip Carberry had to make up five lengths in the straight just to lose by three. Complete and utter garbage, as was the ride by Paul on Harchibald.
April 25, 2008 at 18:52 #159859I’ve still got withdrawal symptoms over the ride Paul gave Psycho at Cheltenham
April 25, 2008 at 19:58 #159865Its possibly "arrogance" from overrating the overrated beasts that they were partnering
April 25, 2008 at 20:06 #159869The real professional in the Carberry household is the amateur.
April 25, 2008 at 20:29 #159877Is there ever a bad ride when a horse wins?
I agree with marb the best horse on the day won, it’s all to easy to criticize rides when horses lose whether you’ve backed them or not.
I remember at times last year on here many were spotting "non triers" almost everyday and starting threads about them, what’s happened these days? is everyone trying now or are those "non trier spotters" betting less now?
April 25, 2008 at 21:32 #159888Do you, with all your wisdom, Jim, think Philip Carberry gave Sublimity a chance of winning this afternoon?
Irrespective of their financial interests in the race, if any, nobody can watch that race and defend the ride the runner-up was given. I didn’t back the horse in the end, deciding instead to back the ‘sure thing’ Captain Webb at Sandown before re-investing, but had I done so I’d have been more than a tad annoyed.
April 25, 2008 at 22:35 #159916MCP,
I did not feel the ride from Carberry was conspicuous in any way.
I think he was hoping the others would come back as he did not have much under him and knew it.
I may be misreading the race, but that’s how I see it.
I actually decided to stick £20 squids on Punjabi; I ws a bit worried at halfway but he battled well and fully deserved a decent prize.
Sublimity does not seem the same horse, or maybe he won a very below par Champion Hurdle?
Zip
April 25, 2008 at 22:48 #159908LGR, given the result I suppose he could’ve done more but couldn’t all losing jockeys have done more?
I backed Sublimity at Cheltenham in the champion hurdle and thought he looked the winner two out, maybe there’s something more to this than just a bad ride?
close up from the sporting life :-
raced in moderate 5th, 4th and ridden after 2 out, moderate 2nd straight, closed but no impression and kept on same pace run-in
April 25, 2008 at 22:57 #159924No, not all losing jockeys could do more if they had been seen to have their mount in a position to offer some sort of challenge at any time in the latter stages of the race. Had Carberry settled him nearer the pace, asked for an effort half a mile out and he’d found nothing, then fair enough, but he simply adopted the cocky style of his brother, for whatever reason, and gave the horse absolutely no chance.
Fair play to Barry Geraghty though, who clearly knew the ‘talent’ he was up against and used his horse to best effect.
April 25, 2008 at 23:56 #159930It was a poor ride no question. You track your danger on a horse like Sublimity. Carberry completely ignored Punjabi. If thats not poor race riding I’m a martian.
Its not as if he had three or four dangers to choose from.
April 26, 2008 at 08:59 #159962Certainly a green tinge to your cheeks in that bloody awful photo!

Thanks for that.
April 26, 2008 at 10:22 #159980John Francome said that the late Fred Winter gave him this piece of sage advice – you can give other good horses weight but not distance.
I happen to think that Philip Carberry (in particular) should have tried to close the gap sooner than he did. However, Punjabi quickened well and was a worthy winner in my book.

No they just don’t bother posting them on here and let the likes of you continue to live in dreamland that the game is straight and the best horses always win.
April 26, 2008 at 10:44 #159989Has there ever been a ride, by any jockey, you have been happy with MP?
