Except he should have won on
Big Issue
, he gave the winner too much rope!

Thank you Richard! Even when you lose you do me a favour.

Hmmm, just watched the replay again on RUK and not convinced, TAPK … thought the winner quickened again just inside the final furlong as Hughes switched the eventual 2nd and looked to make his ground up and this gave him just enough of a lead to hang onto … the winner certainly wasn’t stopping even though Big Issue was closing fast … won on merit on the day I think.
… but I know which one I’d prefer to be on next time
July 27, 2010 at 18:00 #309166I thought that the ride on Zebedee was absolutely first class. When it comes off for him he looks really good
July 27, 2010 at 20:52 #309203Not everyones cuppa (good evening Sir Michael!) but in the right circumstances Hughes is as good as there is – he and Martyr did a passable impression of Paul Carberry & Harchibald today, and all whilst winning handsomely.
Some call it flashy, but IMO it looks beautiful and lives long in the memory.
Of course i’m biased – 20/1 Indian Ink indeed.

I cant argue with that Burrough hill, other than Hughsie had Pabusar in his blind spot when the winner got first run,had he been able to follow him instead of the fav,he would have gone with the winner and won himself! You with me?

That was the day she won the Coronation Stakes, money poured on her all day,i think the ground helped if i remember correctly, she won at half the price Peruvian did she not?

Yep, it’s a good call … also noticed that when Hughes initially asked him to quicken through the gap, Golden Hinde just jinked to his right and it took a couple of extra strides for Big Issue to find daylight … could have made all the difference.
July 27, 2010 at 22:27 #309227Used to think he was rubbish, horses don’t find as much off the bridle for Hughsie as Fallon or Fortune.
But now my opinion has changed.
The reason why he does not find much off the bridle (and looks so often as if he gives them too much to do): Is, horses travel on the bridle further for him, than any other jockey (possible exception Spencer). So his rides are not going to find as much off the bridle. i.e he gets as much (or more) out of them with his style, than a more "vigorous" jockey. Punters have just got to think as the 2 furlong comes:
"Yes, he’s travelling like a winner, going to win a lot of money here. Hold on! It’s Hughes, don’t count your chickens".
Value Is EverythingJuly 27, 2010 at 23:27 #309239Im in the minority im sure but never have been a huge fan of Hughes.
Personally when i see Hannons horses with another top jock on board i am far more interested than when its Hughes.
Eucharist and Major Art are two recent ones i remember off the top of my head.
Mind you its always easy to remember the ones that suit your point of view!
July 27, 2010 at 23:29 #309242Think Hughes is a decent jock. Rode some great races round Sandown on moderate sorts. I dont try to remember the bad uns!!

IMHO horses travel how they travel regardless whos on them. Lost count the amount of times Mick Fitzgerald had looked like hes had a double handful only to find the tank is empty!!!………..god i hated him at times!!!

I see you’ve got that dilemma in three races at Goodwood today, Bagnallc. Good luck.
