That commentary on the RSA, simply superb….
“This the last and again just as at Kempton he makes a mistake but this time he’s to the other side, he is getting the wobbles! He’s drifting over to the near side, pulling himself up! Whisper now draws alongside, Might Bite might have thrown this away, Whisper joins in, Might Bite rallies, he might yet pull it out of the fire!! Whisper and Might Bite to the line….It’s close!!!”
Spine tingling to watch!
March 15, 2017 at 22:06 #1292468You should hear the commentary from John Hunt on Radio 5 Live I’ve never heard his voice so high pitched I thought he was going to pass out!
March 16, 2017 at 04:16 #1292570Richard Hoiles could barely breathe after they crossed the line lol. That commentary was truly great. Best commentator around.
March 16, 2017 at 07:22 #1292576“The last fence for Might Bite. Ohhhh not his best effort……Whisper trying to close and Might Bite is beginning to paddle! He’s drifting off a true line! He hangs fire and Whisper is coming home straight as a gun barrel. Nico de Boinville tries to straighten out Might Bite who rallies on the near side. Might Bite coming back at Whisper.
It’s tight!!!!!”
Simon Holt commentating on course and for RUK. Also spine tingling.
March 16, 2017 at 08:26 #1292599I must be in the minority here because I’m not mad keen on Hoiles. I find him rather… I dunno… smug?
But I agree that commentary was really good. By contrast I think he tried to overegg the previous race with all the comments about how there was bound to be a stewards. I don’t think that’s really needed by anyone who backed either of the front two. There’s also a danger that hoiles could be like the “boy who cried wolf” so when something happens which is genuine, people won’t care about it because you get excited about everything.
I am starting to prefer him to the previous commentator simon holt though, who I didn’t like at all. He used to get fake excited at the end of the race, this would pee me off no end if I backed a loser.
March 16, 2017 at 09:01 #1292603To be fair, the race provided all the drama you need: any commentator would have served up a memorable commentary there purely because of the sheer quality of the raw material provided.
Agree with thejudge1’s comment about Hoiles’ going on too much about the possibility of a Stewards’ Enquiry after the opening race, by the way.

That was just downright weird, exhorting people “not to throw away their tickets” on Neon Wolf, then rather plaintively repeating “there’s still no stewards’ enquiry announced” until he finally petered out..!

March 16, 2017 at 13:19 #1292702I like Hoiles. He mentions colours in running, notices errors back in the field.
I also like the course graphics they use.
March 16, 2017 at 15:04 #1292735Hunt Holt and Hoiles have been at the top of the game for the last 15 years or so. After that its down to personal preference; I miss Simon Holt who I think gets the drama and excitement right (I don’t think its fake).
I think Holt is the best commentator the UK has ever had. (Drop controversial bomb and exits stage right).
March 16, 2017 at 16:07 #1292760They are all ok but they should stick to just that. Holts page in the Weekender this week was as bland as it gets. Was like reading a brochure. Distinct impression that putting any the top brass’s noses out of joint is most certainly not on the agenda. if the jockey club initiated sado masochistic charlie head orgies where stable girls are ritually raped and beheaded he would probably sit on the fence
Compare and contrast with the excellent Lydia
March 18, 2017 at 21:47 #1293464Thank god they dropped Mike Cattermole the only good thing of the 4 days form.
March 18, 2017 at 21:55 #1293465Quite a picture you conjured up there Clive….
March 19, 2017 at 10:27 #1293507Believe me it’s not a pretty site. I had to leave

Any? Des Scahill?
Would have loved to have heard Thommo commentating on that finish!
March 19, 2017 at 15:17 #1293558Hahahaha Des Scahill now that I’d love to hear just to see how boring he could make it – that’d be a feat in itself.
Thommo – “Ohhh here comes Whisper with a good looking run! Now here comes Might Bite with a good looking run! Whisper rallying strongly with an even better looking run! But Might Bite might be getting up with the good looking run to end all good looking runs!”

“As Might Bite makes his way towards the near rail, which will take him past the winning post and towards the pulling up area leading to the horse walk which will take him on the approach to the unsaddling enclosure…”
