Yes, the series that has seen horses like Royal Shakespeare run into the ground to accumulate pathetic 5th placed points under a pathetic system is going to return. I can’t believe it. Fortunately no one can claim it’s returning bigger and better. The only thing that seems to be revamped is the prize fund, and that has been reduced to £100,000 to the winners connections – about the sum of winning a half decent race when you think the owner will get only £50,000 of it. It’s even going to be called “The Racing For Change Order Of Merit.” Here’s something they might like to change to start with – the actual existence of the Order Of Merit. The best horse doesn’t win it, the best horse who runs well the most times in Grade 1 company might not even win it. And, if the stupid Racing For Change mob never realised, no one looks at the Order Of Merit table with a tingle of excitement after each Graded race. No doubt the increases of field sizes prove that the Order Of Merit works………
October 19, 2009 at 11:11 #254214Yes indeed, the Order of Merit has been, is, and will continue to be, a complete waste of time and money.
No one is interested in it, and nor should they be.
October 19, 2009 at 12:49 #254227Erm, but surely……….erm, it does provide a narrative
October 19, 2009 at 19:22 #254284I dont actually see the point of it now. It came in with a big marketing spend but with the prize money for the biggest races and £1 million bonuses for hurdlers and chasers the Order of Merit pot is small.
Voy Por was a deserving winner last year but memories of Royal Shakespeare and Lough Derg running every time a day ends in y didnt do anything for my love of the concept.
