I’m really surprised to see Zanza at 14/1 for this race. He ran 4 times this year. Second behind Allmankind. No real chance, but he gave weight to Allmankind who is now rated 160. Then he was a clear winner at Newbury, before falling at Cheltenham 3 out. He was absolutely cruising until his fall. This race was won by Sky Pirate in front of Ibleo. Zanza gave 11 pounds to Sky Pirate and 8 pounds to Ibleo. They franked the form in the Grand Annual and are also rated 160/157 now. Zanza also ran in the Grand Annual (I also liked him for that race), but he was badly hampered by a faller.

    Zanza 14/1 EW

Zanza for me as well. Was unfortunate at Cheltenham and a possible opportunity to put it right here. 15-1 ew.

Was surprised at that price myself DBR, he’s definitely considered.

The other pair I like are Joke Dancer at 16’s, and Ain’t My Fault.

I’ll just bet them just now, and hope they make it.

A suspicious price on zanza almost like they know he’s an unlikely runner

Will wait to see if he goes blue then invest some money

I have taken the price on Zanza, boosted to 15. Accept he could be a non runner but only a small bet and prepared to take the chance.

Is there a concern with Zanza he might not be suited to a big-field cavalry charge? Looking back at the grand annual he looked to be out on his feet and struggling to hold a position before he was hampered.

I thought On The Slopes was the one to take from the GA for this. A bold, aggressive jumper, he’ll prefer the flat track and will be able to hold his position up in the van. Unfortunately the books agree and there’s not much juice in the 7/1 given he’s not long had a hard race.

I was also quite keen to back Frero Banbou but his price is truly shocking given what he has achieved!

Danny, Zanza was only beaten 2 lengths in a Betfair Hurdle on good ground on a flat track with more runners in it, whilst losing a shoe. The key to him will be that he jumps ok.

Fair point. I just wonder if it’s the pace that puts his jumping under pressure.

Moon Over Germany is a big price at 10/1 for a former winner, and he’s my selection here.

    My figures for this race:

    Sully D’Oc AA 163
    Dostal Phil 155
    Gaelik Coast 155
    Destrier 155
    Joke Dancer 154
    On The Slopes 153
    The King Of May 153

Generally very close but Sully D’Oc AA* (25/1, 33/1 in a place) comes out with a decent advantage off the back of a good effort in a strong race at Cheltenham and good performances before that. Had some trouble in running at Cheltenham otherwise would likely have been closer. Ground has come right for him. Worth an each-way punt in an open race.

Not much Irish representation, they seem to target Cheltenham more than Aintree, but Moon Over Germany (12/1, 14/1 in a place) comes in under the radar for me with no recent handicap chase form but plenty of ‘back class’.

    * The AA part of the name is really a bit of an add on and not really part of the name. I believe it signifies a non-thoroughbred strand in his pedigree though others may know more.

Rob, we are the exact same on this. I’ve done the same two.

Moon Over Germany especially interesting even off a 12pd higher mark. Gainford is a massive plus and the ground coming right for him helps as well. His run off 141 last season at Cheltenham over hurdles isn’t bad and he’s better over fences.

I’ve taken a very simple approach here, Zanza 11-1, and Moon Over Germany 14-1. Both prices have a bit of a whiff about them, but both selections staring me in the face.

I don’t like the favourite at all

I can get bigger on both of mine, but they’re not big fancies, and I’ll maybe just stick with the Antepost bets.

If the prices hold, I’ll maybe top up to cover the maximum EW Places.

I’ll try Frodon’s big little half brother Sao at 33s ew. He’s a leggy scopey free going beast who should provide a bit of fun for my money, as long as his “if in doubt, close your eyes and launch yourself at it” policy doesn’t end in tears.

There does not look to be much confidence in Zanza, so I have backed Moon Over Germany as well. Very impressive when he won the last running in 2019, although there were a lot of non-runners that day. On The Slopes should go well too.
