The problem with the Tories putting Boris back in charge is there’s no Brexit to ran down our throats and more importantly the script is worn out , no-one is laughing anymore , the Tories have scraped the bottom of the barrel , they need a new barrel

Johnson needs the biggest reinvention in world history, it’s true, but those who tap into populism never run out of material and “Events, dear boy, events!” will ensure there’s some new bandwagon Johnson can climb aboard and grab hold of the reins of in due course.

This is how populist politicians operate – there’s always some primal, tribal, fear they can tap into and exploit.

I wouldn’t rule out a Johnson comeback if Little Rishi cops a battering at the polls.

Boris will set try a comeback but it’ll be more Joe Louis than George Foreman …. the legs have gone and the chin exposed

I have no particular sympathy for Johnson. There are far greater issues than the fate of individual politicians.

But what is this? A prominent figure from the committee which sat in judgement on Johnson also attended a drinks party?

Well I never! Whoever would have thought it? Strike me down with a feather etc.

I can no longer bring myself to watch PMQs – it’s a puerile pantomime in my book.

I actually preferred Starmer when he first became Labour leader and was what he is – a forensic lawyer.

His attempts to be humourous make me feel slightly ill – he’s not in John Smith’s league and never will be.

I’ll just about vote for him, but christ I wouldn’t want to be trapped in a lift with him (nor he with me, no doubt).

If Jenkin has done wrong then he deserves the same treatment as everyone else. Comes across as pretty desperate though, they must have been sat on this for a while, none of it has any bearing on what Johnson has or has not done. More Tory infighting though so it’s a no-lose situation.

PMQs is cringeworthy stuff, just one lame attempt after another to shoehorn their pre-prepared ‘zingers’ into every answer. Half the rubbish that is spouted never gets challenged and all in all it’s a complete waste of time. I’m sure I’ve thanked you for watching it so we don’t have to before Ian, I’m amazed you lasted as long as you did!

I think a deserve a medal, tbh – I’m now firmly in your camp on this, it’s completely unwatchable!

I don’t think the story in Guido is desperate. It is a quite a good scoop.

I recognise it might have been known about for a while but not just by Guido. Westminster is a small place. I find it difficult to believe no one knew about it in the BBC, ITN, Sky News or the newspapers. Why didn’t they report that a prominent member of the committee is a hypocrite? Did it not fit their narrative?

At the very least, Jenkin should have recused himself from the committee.

But I tend to agree with the leading article in “Spiked” last night, which said:

“They (politicians and advisers) seemingly knew, evidenced by their own actions, that lockdown was illiberal, inhumane and utterly impractical. And yet they continued to advocate for it and blast those who dared defy it.”

    And:

“Rather than calling for yet another person to resign…how about we wipe the slate clean? Let’s admit lockdown was an insane upending of our civil liberties that must never be repeated. Let’s have an amnesty for all the lockdown-breakers (hypocritical MPs excluded).”

Anyone fined for breaking restrictions must be feeling very hard done by. It seems unlikely that there weren’t even more MPs at it than we already know about. It does raise further questions of the Met as well, how didn’t they see all this going on?

Yes a load of them got fined including Johnson and Sunak but that was more a reactive, symbolic gesture to make it look like they were doing something. Some people were fined £10k for organising lockdown breaking events, someone at Downing Street must have been organising these things.

I came across an Owen Jones article calling for a lockdown amnesty, must be bad if it’s got him and Spiked in agreement!

It wasn’t just politicians breaking the rules and being hypocritical. Kay Burley and Beth Rigby – both extremely vocal supporters of lockdowns – had to be suspended by Sky News when it came to light they had attended a party together.

Professor Neil “Half a Million people are all going to die unless we lock down now” Ferguson clearly felt the rules did not apply to him when he travelled half way across London for a dalliance with his mistress. I doubt they practiced social distancing…

When the Dominic Cummings car journey to Barnard Castle media frenzy was at its height, newspaper and television reporters (including Burley again) were clearly photographed standing right next to each other. The scrum of press photographers when Cummings left his house were not exactly socially distancing either.

These people knew it was all bull and did not believe their own propaganda for a second. Even if they did believe it but did not care about themselves, would they really have put their families and children at risk?

In that respect, there is something quite poetic about Johnson – a man with no principles whatsoever – having his political career ruined by rules he knew were stupid and did not even believe in.

I must admit that, of all the things I’m critical of this government about, “Partygate” is the issue I care least about.

Believing it’s “one rule for us and another rule for them” is an elitist poison that is hardly confined to politicians – it pervades all of British society where the unspoken creed is: “the more money and power you have, the less the law applies to you.”

Covid has brought it belatedly into sharp focus, that’s all.

‘Covid has brought it belatedly into sharp focus, that’s all.’

Watching their parents die from behind a plastic screen and a mask, or even not being allowed to be there at all, while the ‘elites’ party away to their hearts’ content will have that effect on people.

Even the late Queen, the very definition of elitist privilege, managed to sit alone at her husband’s funeral.

Many of the other grubby dealings like ‘creative’ tax arrangements and lucrative second ‘jobs’ that they get up to don’t really bother people all that much, some may even reason that they’d do it themselves if they could. As I have said before, this is personal and why it hits home so hard.

As for Johnson, his opponents will continue to attack him, his supporters will continue their defence and life will go on. There are plenty of both in his own party so sit back and watch them rip each other apart.

Well it was bound to happen. I’ve had my sis-in-law up staying with me
from Wellesbourne, nr Stratford, for the past week. She’s quite an incredible
soul, taken in 2 Ukrainian ladies so far, runs charity events, and at 73
takes no **** from anyone. Sharp as a tack, Chartered Librarian….I could
go on. For all these things and more she has my love and respect…..but,
she’s a dyed in thw wool Tory (as are all her neighbours and friends), gets
the Daily Mail delivered every day.

I try to keep the politics talk to a minimum, and let the odd comment slide
by for the sake of peace and harmony, but at the lunchtime news she let rip
with so it’s alright for Starmer who was seen boozing and keeping a restaurant
open until 11pm so they could get a carry out delivered with his friends but
nothing happens. “But he was working and he did say if he had broken the law he
would resign” I parried. It’s just the same was the retort and he got away with
    it.

Don’t do it, don’t do it I could hear that inner voice. ” It’s the economy and
getting this country backon it’s feet, not partygate we should be wasting a year
on, he should still be PM”. Red flag finally waving at bull……”Johnson is the most
untrustworthy, underhand, lying 2 faced etc etc etc”. Very awkward silence…..would
you like some cheese on toast (he feebly tried to rebuild the already broken bridge  )

    I tried, honestly.

Once again, Richard hits the nail on the head.

I was fortunate enough not to have that experience, hence my stance on it.

But I have sufficient empathy to understand those who did endure that may well have an altogether different view.

Absolutely Ian my comment also comes from a place of empathy rather than direct experience thankfully.

All these gatherings in themselves don’t bother me, nobody was at much more risk going to those than they were going to their local Tesco. It’s simply the arrogance of those in power and in the public eye who tell you one thing then do another. Especially when they proceed to lie through their teeth about it, which is of course what the current uproar is actually about.

BigG, it’s exactly what these rags exist for sadly. Divide and conquer. Political discourse has become so utterly toxic of late that it’s hard to ever see it getting better.
