I was discussing this with Marlingford, who, I was delighted to read, seemed in broad agreement, on the main forum
When, exactly, did “contacting people” become “reaching out?”
I’ve been thanked for “reaching out” and I’m like: “Err, I simply contacted you and asked a question, so don’t behave like you’re some superhero I’m begging to have save me.”
Same deal with “thinking outside the box” and “blue sky thinking” – what was wrong with “having an original idea?”
We live in an increasingly pretentious, shallow and superficial world where the ability to dig up a garden weed with a shovel has become “sourcing and utilising relevant hardware dynamically to action the extraction of a malevolent embedded parasitical growth in a horticultural scenario.”

It suggests a neediness or helplessness on the part of the, er, “reacher”. It’s not even as if it is shorter to say or type than “contact”.
I’m guilty of letting a few of the types of business-speak phrases that Ian mentions slip into my vocabulary, but “reach out” really grates with me!
July 4, 2023 at 21:13 #1654407Another modern use of language that I hate is how conversational and over-familiar a lot of online journalism has become.
For example, a news site posting an article on social media with an inane lead comment such as “How tragic” or “This is awkward!”.
July 4, 2023 at 21:16 #1654408I 100% agree.

This ought to be the law.

I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains
I've walked and I crawled on six crooked highwaysJuly 5, 2023 at 01:12 #1654413Purwell, it means psychological manipulation where you are making someone doubt their own perception of reality. Usually this is as a sustained course of action over a long period, though nowadays people sometimes misuse the term to just mean “lying”.
July 5, 2023 at 06:40 #1654414The term is derived from the title of a film:
July 5, 2023 at 08:47 #1654417“Reaching Out”
probably designed to encourage people to talk about mental health
but its such a cringe that it would possibly do the oppositeIf I ever said to my brother “I’m here if you need to reach out”
He’d have reached out his fist straight into my faceIf he was struggling he’d ask to chat or talk…
Blackbeard to conquer the World
July 5, 2023 at 09:33 #1654420“Reaching out” has become nauseasting corporate speak.
It’s adopted by pretentious, conceited, young executives/team leaders who think they’ve got superpowers and superknowledge/wisdom to impart and that they’re really good people for using these powers so generously.
Actually, they’re usually shallow, superficial, insubstantial, people, simply being paid to do a job of work – usually badly.

July 5, 2023 at 14:01 #1654426Social media seems to be another bountiful source of irritating new expressions. Examples being “life hack”, “side hustle” and “living your best life”.
But “reach out” is still the worst in my view!
July 5, 2023 at 14:56 #1654428I’ll have to return to my working days, nearly 7 years ago. A certain ‘type’ began using these:
“Let me run this one past you”
“Giving you a heads up”
“Spinning plates”
I worked in an office, financial services – it was definitely worst in early noughties, for this bilge. Some of us had a bullshit bingo sheet with 12 of these expressions on and would cross each one off, when in conferences/presentations😁.
July 5, 2023 at 16:34 #1654434I worked for a small company which got bought out by a corporate and being a manager some of the absolute bull these people spout from their mouths is unbelievable. My biggest bugbear is when people use the word ‘guys’ it absolutely makes my skin crawl. The other day someone said to me ‘I’m going to pop that question back to you’ I mean what does that mean I bloody well asked you. I’m angry just writing this
The things I want most in life are the things that I can't win.

Has Chezza achieved the seemingly impossible and found a subject we unanimously agree on?
July 5, 2023 at 17:25 #1654442Maybe so – if anyone now comes on this thread and thanks us all for reaching out to them, we could witness a rare Lounge pile on.
