The tote have helpfully directed me to totedirect.com where the trifecta and other rollover details are revealed. User friendly after all.
April 10, 2011 at 18:14 #349680It (the National SP return) is a scandal each and every single year.
But it doesn’t seem to put people off, I’m sure very, very few understand it and you could probably offer a 200% book with very few complaints. That’s probably why they get off with it.
That doesn’t make it right though, and I will repeat my mantra that the SP return should be subject to regulation.
As for the trifecta – what’s ‘rakebake’?
April 10, 2011 at 20:00 #349706The only time I was able to inform the crowd that they were being ripped off with the overround was at an Easter Monday point to point – which makes Grand National day seem positively generous.
I worked out the overround as the horses were inspecting the first fence and advised the crowd over the tannoy to bet with the Tote (organised by the local Lions club for the Hunt/charity).
I was soon met at the foot of the ladder by the Chairman of the Hunt asking us to stop saying this as the Hunt was worried that we’d annoy the bookmakers to such an extent that they wouldn’t come again the following year!

This is a rebate of some of the tote’s take from the pool. Sometimes you can get 10% if you are a large punter or get a special offer. However, again it seems to be one of those things about the tote that is not totally transparent. I would like the rakeback but don’t know how to get it reliably. I will enquire again of the tote and see what they say.
April 11, 2011 at 12:12 #349771The tote say they do special offers from time to time and you can get 10% back on online S African tote bets at the moment.
April 16, 2011 at 09:09 #350503The tote trifecta rollover is about £12000 and it goes on the Scottish GN today if you fancy a go. (Information found after another email to the tote as the totedirect website didn’t show the race selected).
I’m not sure if it’s worth it. But I doubt if the trifecta pool will be much over 50k and you can do a 10p perm so it might be a reasonable value idea with a fair chance of winning about £250 if you do say a 200 line perm for £20.
April 16, 2011 at 14:09 #350560Do you think? a ‘Trifecta Watch’ thread would be good Kasparov – we could put details on every week (or get someone from the Tote to update it for us maybe?)
April 16, 2011 at 19:49 #350624Unusually for me, I took my own advice, and won £283 today from a 10p 7 runner perm on the Scottish GN likely contenders (a lot better than the tricast div of £120 for 10p)- my first ever winning exotic bet. I was particularly pleased that I forecast the div quite accurately. I was out today so I didn’t see the pool size, and sadly missed the thrill of the race, but judging from the big difference between the tricast and the trifecta divs it looks like the rollover had a significant impact. Many thanks to Glenn for revealing this hidden gem.
We definitely should stop publicising this free lunch immediately. It’s already bad enough gambling on races where horses die, and it would be even more unethical to let others freeride on the information and dilute our returns. Most people can live a full life without knowing about the trifecta and we should leave it that way.
More seriously, it would be good to know when the positive expectation bets are out there. It’s quite time consuming to work out the maths on the tote jackpot and trifecta pools, and that’s even before one considers the selections. I sometimes try to give back some of the benefit I get from reading others’ comments on TRF, but I can’t commit to ferreting out tote details on a regular basis. However, if the tote would do it for us, or at least give the rollover details in an easy to access place such as this that would be good.
