Thommo can’t possibly be the most overrated pundit because too few people seem to rate him in the first place. I like him for what he is: a good presenter.
Mine is Claire Balding. I don’t like her manner, pompous yet condescending: as if she’s presenting the program exclusively for the benefit of dilettante minor Royals.

So wearing contact lenses makes you close your eyes but only when you are speaking? Poppycock!
That’s it then underscore, there is absolutely no excuse for him to do this most annoying habit and he should be shot
February 4, 2008 at 11:21 #140070The Scream team = Claire Balding and Willie Carson
This pairing is guaranteed to make you scream, throw in Jodie Kidd and some pompous ‘fashion bloke’ at Ascot and keep making jokes about ‘little willie’.
The BBC = Possibly the worst racing show in the world.

FORGOT ABOUT THAT FASHION BLOKE ARRAGGHHHHHHH
February 4, 2008 at 13:59 #140112Its` a vaild point that NRWA makes about Thommo. I would
suggest that he`s the best poorly rated pundit. So, if we had
5 divisions of say Poorly Rated, Mediocre, Ambivalent, Good
and Sublime, would Thommo be promoted up a rung?I think Jimbo flutters his eyes more than closes them. But that`s just me being pedantic or the TV`s on the blink.
In all fairness to the chap, It must be said that I admire his honesty, because the stats of his tipping service are for all to see or download on the TIMEFORM site. He doesn`t disguise the fact that last year was abysmal. Conversely, 2006 was a good year. But that wasn`t chucked in your face during his presentations. For me he brings a certain gravitas to the program and knows his onions. But that would make his eyes cry.
Regards,
Dave
PS I won`t mention the rugby as this is racing site, so there.
February 4, 2008 at 16:17 #140143Totally agree about Jim McGrath being very over rated. He may be very knowledgeable and may be a great punter, but as a pundit, his job is to give winners and he rarely does.

Father Ted?
A**E!!!
February 5, 2008 at 16:30 #140404I think the reason many people do not like Timeform Jim McGrath is that he comes over as an arrogant no all with less charisma than other presenters. But there is no question in my mind he knows what he is on about. I do not see why people are saying he only tips favourites etc. May be they are not paying attention to the detail. He often says the favourite has the best chance of winning, but that is not a tip. The ones he mentions as value are the ones to be interested in. Don’t think he is allowed to give a detailed analysis, as others have said here, Channel 4 racing is aimed at the masses, not particularly racing oriented people. I certainly would have something to say if he gave too much Timeform information away, bad enough what is available on Betfair these days. He often disagrees with Timeform analysis anyway. Jimbo must be biting his lip with some of the things John Francome comes up with. Does that man ever pick up a form book? “Think he will be better on this groundâ€
Value Is EverythingFebruary 5, 2008 at 17:01 #140412Cunningham is definitely a former Timeform employee. Pretty sure that Mellish isn’t and I don’t think Neesom is, although if anyone knows to the contrary about the last named I wouldn’t disagree with them.
February 5, 2008 at 17:45 #140429Steve Mellish tends to rabble on a bit. Lydia must have the patience of a saint.
Mainstream tv has to cater for a wider audience – not just racing aficianados: therefore some sort of balance has to be reached – even though CH4 racing starts from both extremes (McCririck and McGrath) and has yet to find the optimum.

February 5, 2008 at 21:34 #140471Steve Mellish is top notch. His instant recall on the replay is amazing. Not really a formbook man myself but if I wanted to listen to a formbook aficionado he’d be my pick.
February 5, 2008 at 21:57 #140478I have respect for Simon Rowlands as a journalist but I find him a bit pedantic.

I agree and I am a formbook man. I think his recall is excellent and he really knows what he is talking about.
As for the most over-rated pundit, it cannot be Thommo as he comes bottom of the list as a pundit and presenter in my opinion. It has to be Jim McGrath. It’s not that he is bad but I don’t think he is anywhere near as good as some people say he is.Pete

Presenters as in the way they present the racing.
To actually discuss the form or chances of the runners, useless.Value Is EverythingFebruary 5, 2008 at 23:50 #140503I think Zoey Bird is unbelieveably bad as a pundit/presenter,analyst/interviewer.Her speciality is confidently declaring the result of incredibly tight photo finishes.

She is fitter than Jim Mcgrath though.
