The Dewhurst of the late 70’s/early 80’s – the super horse beaten by a maiden, finished last of 4 having destroyed everything on all his other starts. The RP did something on it a few months ago.
The horse that beat Gorytus was no maiden he had previously won the Middle Park -Dieses I think.

I remember Gorytus very well. Trained by Dick Hern, the colt hacked on his debut (Acomb Stakes, York) against Henry Cecil trained hotpot, which I backed that day (I think it may have been Dunbeath). He then won the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster, before starting at odds on (1/2) for the Dewhurst. Beforehand, Hern was quoted as saying Gorytus (by Nijinsky) was the best two year old he had yet trained. He was being hailed in some quarters as a superstar. His jockey, Willie Carson, thought Gorytus a good thing to win the Dewhurst. Henry Cecil and Diesis had other ideas, and so (allegedly) did the dopers. As it turned out, Gorytus sauntered
home, beaten 37 lengths by the other three. He raced once more as a three year old (again defeated) and then retired.Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
January 16, 2008 at 11:42 #135646There have been many controversial races.
Paul Nicholls always maintained that Playschool was doped in the Gold Cup when he was riding it.
Possibly.
Brownes Gazette being left at the start of the Champion Hurdle however Dermot Browne did I believe own up to doing it on purpose for some syndicate.
Dermot Browne was involved in doping, but he was also a good story teller and I if his misplaced ego’s at work in this story.
Graham Bradley trying to get a Gold Cup postponed at the start for betting reasons when it was snowing. Sorry I am to old to recall the years
An apochryphal story?
Rob
Playschool was definitely got at totally died under the man and was fine no in great form prior to the race.he simply was not himself and the only thing that does that in such a short space of time is doping ……From first hand experience Dermot is full of crap and that’s absolute BS…..Zorro couldn’t have pulled that off……he got scoodled and was too big a twat to admit later he messed up …just making himself seem important ..Brad wouldn’t have done such a thing, well at least not without being nice about it……….a lovable rouge would best describe Brad who is totally misunderstood……..mainly by himself
January 16, 2008 at 13:02 #135674Got to add the famous PPP….Dick Pitman’s impersonation of a sack of potatoes on Crisp on the run in at Aintree……..Pitman’s Panic Performance……shocking piece of riding
January 16, 2008 at 13:07 #135676the Carvills Hill, Golden Freeze Gold Cup was the first controversial race that I came across when I renewed my interest in racing..
January 17, 2008 at 04:00 #135862Anyone remember the horse they said Daivid Goulding stopped ………..was a 4 horse race, I think, and he dropped him out the back……..David was raging with the Stewards said they hadn’t a bloody clue what they were talking about and only an idiot would even try and to stop a horse in such a small field.
January 17, 2008 at 10:16 #135908February 1967 – Newbury – the then Schweppes (now the Tote) Gold Trophy Handicap Hurdle and the case of the winner who made his own dope…..or did he.
Although 40 years have elapsed since the drawn-out aftermath of this race, the events surrounding the controversial victory of HILL HOUSE are still worth a read at…..

January 17, 2008 at 10:57 #135920What the story doesn’t tell you Pod is the lead up to Hill House.
Ryan Price had already won the race twice with Rosyth and been suspended.
He almost won it a third time with Rosyth but was beaten by Elan rtrained by John Sutcliffe who was also pulled up by the Stewrds after landing ahge gamble. The following year Ryan Price was at it again and landed yet another huge touch with Le Vermontois and then the daddy of them all Hill House (1967). Ryan Price new he was for the high Jump when the horse won but as you posted handled well and got away with it…..cost him a pitance to what they had taken out the books.
He almost won the race again with Major Rose but not even the Capt could stop Persian War which was probably the best race for the Scheppwes Gold trophy ever.
Only a few years later I was lucky to be told to have my mortgage on Bootlaces who was again a huge gamble on the day….Cala Mesquida was another and Within the Law helped easterby’s travelling head lad Mick Lambert set up training when he backed the horse at a huge price……..It seemed ever year someone somewhere landed a huge touch in the race and is probably the most controversial hurdle race in history for that reason alone.

I didn’t mean Diesis, was there not a maiden in 2nd or 3rd in that race?
January 18, 2008 at 11:22 #136155That would be 2nd placed Gordian.

Anyone remember Ile De Chypre’s run in the 88 King George handicap?
As I recall, he was 2l clear going into the last furlong and looking to win comfortably when he swerved violently across the course and unshipped the unfortunate Greville Starkey. Later said to be the work of someone in the grandstand with some kind of high-pitched sonic gun, though that takes some swallowing.
Wonder if the same guy was at Devon Loch’s Grand National?
January 20, 2008 at 23:15 #136664Not sure if this has been mentioned but cahervillahow’s disqualification in the whitbread gold cup was quite controversial at the time – think docklands express was awarded the victory
A real good but someways unlucky servant for Mouse Morris, he was beaten a short head in the irish national 3 weeks before the above invident and was also second in the national that never was in 1993
January 23, 2008 at 19:31 #137308have to agree about nureyev losing the 2000 gns , but happily i had a late phone call from the course and got on known fact.
Ille de chypre however i do believe starkey, i had backed it and remember it well, and a horse does’nt spook like that for nothing.January 23, 2008 at 21:04 #137339Good call, Jackal – Cahervillahow’s connections must really have upset the gods at some point.

I’ll never forget that incident as long as I live Jackal- there was a real feeling in Ireland of anti-Irish bias, as the interference was minimal. Sadly it was in the days before "double result" so we all lost our dough as well!
January 24, 2008 at 22:00 #137540indeed it wasn’t the most well received ruling in Ireland
Strange that Cahervillahow, although not really a top class horse, was the flagship 3 miler for ireland for that generation. I used to love the owners silks – pink with red hearts, nice novelty without being too gimicky. She had another good 3mile mare who’s name escapes me now
How our standards have increased since then and now expect or look for a viable gold cup contender
January 24, 2008 at 22:21 #137546Think her name was Mrs Valentine (the owner, not the mare!)
