Assuming it ever stops raining, there is the usual feast of Bank Holiday racing this weekend, and circumstances now permit that I’ll be out twice – to Cartmel on the Saturday and Huntingdon on the Monday. Yay.
(NB Please don’t assume I’m omitting Sunday on account of it being all Flat – I’ve more Flatastrophes to write at some point, after all. Rather, I have to get my tax stuff sorted out this weekend so that Adam Hart-Davis will work it out for me. In person. With an abacus and everything.)
Where is everybody else venturing to, that they’re prepared to admit to? Any more for the two aforementioned tracks, perhaps?
Cheers,
Jeremy

I was in Cartmel last week and in and around lake district. It was very very wet. Couldn’t go to Carlisle races due to waterlogging and I wouldn’t be surprised if Cartmel went the same way sorry to say. It was still horrid when I left yesterday too.
CrizzyAugust 22, 2008 at 11:52 #177672Hoping to go to Newcastle on Monday, though it looks dodgy at the moment. Intention is to drop in for Northern League football at Morpeth Town at 11 am, then on to Gosforth Park afterwards.

August 22, 2008 at 12:41 #177682is it a good card at newcastle? we’re up north for a couple of weeks and haven’t been to Newcastle [probably because it always seems to get rained off!]….pity nothing happening at Kelso…

CrizzyNoted with thanks, Crizzy! Barring Biblical storms today and tonight, though, the racecourse executive appears to think all shall be well. The latest update on the racecourse website reads;
“Business is very much going ahead as usual
In spite of the terrible weather we have been experiencing this Summer, the team at Cartmel have been working hard to ensure that it is racing as usual for the August Bank Holiday races on 23rd and 25th August. We recommend that you set off in plenty of time.To avoid as much disruption to the grounds as possible, we have had to slightly alter the lay out of the marquees, trade stands and funfair. We are also busy laying additional trackway to protect the course and vehicles. We look forward to welcoming you to Cartmel and hope you have a most enjoyable day out”.
Fingers crossed that this doesn’t constitute an act of purest optimism on their part – we’ve already seen that at one rather higher-profile course in the last seven days!
The course is currently reported as being good to soft, with heavy patches around the last two fences.

It’s a fair card including the ‘Blaydon Race’ which is a competitive mile nursery. A couple of decent supoorting handicaps. The two mile handicap can be a decent event, but at the moment, if the meeting does go ahead, it seems likely that only the straight course will be used, the two longer races being ditched and one of the others divided.
For Kelso we have to stay patient until October!
I’m crossing my fingers for Hexham on October 11th. We’re booked in a hotel near Newcastle for three days. Last time I tried Hexham it was snowed off, in April, so hoping for better luck in October.

Good to back with the jumpsAugust 23, 2008 at 11:26 #177787Nothing planned for this week unless I have a last minute change of heart on Bank Holiday Monday, but off to the Belgian Grand National at Waregem in 10 days time. At last I’ll be able to see how big that water jump really is!!
