One of the intriguing aspects of racing, whether it’s NH or Flat, are horses racing styles. As we get to know our equine heroes over the seasons and years, some of them adopt and refine a racing method that shapes the path to their identity, success and, occasionally, legendary status.
Of course, it really goes without saying that having a good jockey to galvanize the horse helps too.

Below, I’ve put together four racing styles that are…

Battler – When a horse digs in deep and renews it’s challenge whether it’s been passed, headed or repelling opposition. Seems universal in racing positions.

Grinder – Often front runs or keeps close to the pace. Stamina is their strong point. Gradually turns the screw on the pace as the race develops. As the stamina kicks in, tends to burn off rivals.

Swooper – Mainly hold up horses that sit towards the rear or in last place. Based more on speed than stamina. Comes with a rapid swoop. Timing is crucial.

Thruster – One that has the ability to combine speed and stamina to generate an instant change of pace that puts rivals in immediate trouble.

The interesting part is when horses with these racing styles clash causing strategies/tactics to become unhinged leading to, quite possibly, a thrilling climax.

    Two examples…

If a grinder meets a swooper … could they both end up as battlers?

Should a thruster meet a battler, would they finish as grinders?

Also, from a personal choice, what racing style fascinates you the most?

    Is this an AI test?

    Certainly reads like one.
