A mutual friend informed me yesterday that Raymond died on 26 December. The Leicester bookmaker was one of the last great racecourse characters, and there is a fund of stories about him that exist to exemplify this.
I only met him once. The occasion was lunch somewhere in Birmingham about 15 years ago, and I have never been so richly entertained on the subject of horse racing. I’m wondering whether any other TRF member ever enjoyed the pleasure of Raymond’s company.
Whether or not, RIP Racing Raymond.
