I got as far as looking at the greyhound cards, and I thought they were bloody awful.
What’s with all this light grey text that is difficult to read?

The next day the site was so slow that I gave up, and I haven’t been back since.

I no longer like what I see, and so it isn’t worth the effort anymore.

I am loathe to admit this, but after being somewhat unkind to ATR in a previous post , I am now using their site and frankly its surprisingly good , in fact its very good and easy to use

I cannot envisage any circumstances whee I would pay to use the RP site

    well done ATR

Should there not be a third option "Too Soon To Say"

There is always resistance when a format one is used to is changed – it takes people out of their comfort zone. I would suggest there were as many protests when the RP site changed to the format everyone is now defending so strongly.

Yes there will be teething problems and people will not like having to navigate new layouts but I would expect in six weeks time most people would have completely forgotten about the old RP site.

FWIW I "prefer" the old site but only because I have become used to it and I could navigate my way around without having to consciously think about it. With the new site I have to seek things out but I am sure in a week or two it will again be second nature.

One of the advantages, for me, of these revamps is it makes you think about what you use the site for – how much of the browsing is out of habit? How much do you really need to use? Also having to navigate around a new site you may find nuggets you didn not realise existed.

Think you say it all mate.

    Too soon to judge.

Well it has been "up" for three weeks and now plenty of time to form an opinion.

It is a pile of steaming faeces.

Actually that is not actually true – it is so slow it is impossible to generate enough heat to produce any steam.

I can just about get to grips with the new layout, which is good in some places but non-intuitive in others.

But the speed – although sloth is probably a better description? I think they have tried to be too clever with their fancy design – even page scrolling can be painfully slow and I have a reasonable laptop.

This evening it is just timing out.

Teething problems are one thing – this needs a new set of dentures.

If they cannot get the site to work at a reasonable speed they should swallow their pride and revert back to the old sie.

There is absolutely nothing wrong in admitting you have got it wrong!!!

Fist, goto the ‘Cards & Results’ page – click on date and then the day/date you want.

    Or, goto Sportinglife.com :D

    Fist

1/ Click on log in, and wait for daisy wheel to grind around until you are able to enter your password. Enter pw, and wait again until site eventually recognises you.
2/ Click on ‘cards & results’, and watch those pretty little wheels again while the system decides what day it is.
3/ Click on the day’s date and you will eventually be able to select an alternative date from the drop down calendar.
4/ After another excruciating wait, and more views of that damn daisy wheel, you will ultimately be able to view the cards for the appropriate date, though without any fripperies such as going, distance, number of runners or race value.
5/ Click on the desired race and, after an even longer view of the now ubiquitous daisy wheels, you may finally arrive at a choice of cards. You might choose the ‘at a glance’ one which will give you much less information than is in any evening newspaper, or choose the ‘standard’, which has pretty colours, but is often disjointed, has half of some horse’s name missing, and a magical facility to make runners disapppear if you are a fraction offline with the cursor.
After all this, if you still have any hair left and haven’t punched a hole in your monitor, you might just be able to look at the race you were interested in, though any repetition on more than a couple of races may result in a re-boot.

Or alternatively, you could just say "sod it", and go straight to the Sporting Life site.

For me speed is now adequate (same as old RP) though it will never be particularly fast due to loading all those annoying banner/ads graphics

To re-iterate: if you have no need for video replay, then run the site on Firefox or Google Chrome; both are much faster than IE, which other than being the Microsoft default browser has little to recommend it, in general IMO

I don’t know if this helps anyone, but I’m currently running it through Internet Explorer 8 (Beta version). Speed wise, it’s probably about the same as Firefox, but it should allow you to play the video replays through it (though I haven’t tested it).

Mind you, it’s still a pile of puke.

But isn’t that the nub of the problem,Drone?
From a simple, and almost universably useable, website, we now have this monstrosity that cannot be used at all properly on the world’s most common browser, nor, without more technical knowledge than most possess, can it be used fully on any other browser.
How on Earth any organisation imagine that they can actually get away with charging for something that is worse than what they previously (to all intents and purpose) gave away, flys in the face of simple logic, business or otherwise.

Certainly not an apologist for it RH; as you say the new site seems a step backwards both in terms of access and functionality. There’s been several upgrades to the RP over time and this has been by far the most problematical.

Given the general and wholly justified thumbs down it’s received I doubt they’d dare start charging until some major remedial work has been carried out. It really should still be in ‘beta’ with the old site remaining available until its users are happy with the new one.

My view would be if much of the site is to be subs only then as a first step they should forsake the income generated by the gaudy advertising and get rid of it, which would speed-up loading no end.

BTW I find many websites behave better in browsers other than IE, hence my dislike of it. As all these alternative browsers are freeware there’s nothing to lose by downloading and trialling them.

Eventually the new site will be as good as the old but only after they introduce all the features of the old site and that could take years.
How shortsighted of them not to carry on with the old site and IMPROVE that. A backward step. I vote for the old site.

    The site is demented.

I’m expecting an email from it asking me to run down the shops to pick up a packet of fags on the way over, if it can remember me (it didn’t last time)

….or to find it in a heap at the bottom of the stairs the next time I visit

It must be bad for someone to take the trouble to produce a FREE 35 page guide to the new RP site in PDF format.

    http://betting-school.com/bet/2008/12/1 … ost-guide/

Of course they are not doing it out of the goodness of their heart, they are hoping you may become interested in their products.

I downloaded the beta version but had to go back to IE 7 as it wouldn’t let me log in to the new RP site (basically it wouldn’t let me type in my password).

Apologies GD, bad advice! However, it does highlight another issue with the new site
