Having mentioned Skippers Brig on the Len Lungo thread and had Tor Mentor mention a visit to Venn Otter, I thought it would be fun to find out if others had visited places associated with famous horses.
For instance has anyone climbed the mountains Ben Foinaven, Ben Arkle and Ben Stack after whom these three famous horses are named.
Has anyone visited Mill Reef in the Cayman Island or Caergwrle in Wales.
Just a bit of fun to start off the festive season.
December 6, 2009 at 20:06 #262469I drive past Ben Cruachan every time I go to visit my father-in-law. It’s on the shores of Loch Awe, on the road to Oban.
December 6, 2009 at 20:11 #262470Spent the best part of a day driving round trying to find the Mill House that the great horse was named after [the S.O. could not comprehend why it was so important for me to see it]. Although we got sent up lots of lanes we never did find it, but must have been close at times. Probably spent more time and effort not finding it than most people do who succeed. [if anyone does know exactly where it is please tell me so I can have another go one day; a pilgrimage that I must be made].
December 6, 2009 at 20:39 #262473I don’t know if this really counts, but I’ve visited the Sussex village of Danehill a couple of times.

Aye I forgot all about him and that despite seeing him run in one of his early point to points which was in the UK at Dalston.

Yep, spent a very long day climbing Foinaven (actually a strenuous walk) from which you can see Arkle, and Ben Stack if memory serves
Driven through Ardross which is an area north of Inverness
Must be others but none spring to mind at present, other than the rather boring: I live on the Vale of York in Yorkshire
December 6, 2009 at 23:29 #262493I always thought St Mellion Fairway was named after a road that I used to drive along in Cornwall, but now realise that he must have been named after the golf course at St Mellion. I did think the road had the same name, but it was a long time ago.[oh crikey; memory has gone completely with age…got OS map out and it was the St Kew Highway that I travelled on. Not sure if I ever got to St Mellion; With most names in Cornwall beginning with either a St or a Tre it does get confusing].
