Alright gents,
I am really finding it hard to get any sort of racing photos at a lower grade like class 3/4 horses, it’s easy enough to few the duke of marmalades and ravens pass on google but im looking more the likes of Woodcutter and Expresso Star.
January 25, 2009 at 14:27 #206402If I may piggyback onto this thread, I want a photo of Pendil that I can give as a present to the pub landlord, so that he can put it on the wall.
I’ve tried googling for it a few times, and looked on the RP website, but to no avail.
A few years ago there was an article in the RP where a famous racing photographer was being interviewed. I think his big break came when he took a picture of Pendil taking off from outside the wings at an open ditch at Newbury.
That is the photo I want. About 18 inches by 30 inches would do nicely. I can provide the frame.
January 25, 2009 at 14:58 #206407Hi Gerald, I believe the photo of Pendil was taken by Ed Byrne. Only problem is that I don’t know where you could get a copy!
Mr Wilson, some of the professional racing photographers have their own websites and there are also agency sites you could try. These are a few examples:
http://www.racingfotos.com/ This is an agency site that also provides prints to the public
January 25, 2009 at 15:11 #206411Try emailing the Racing Post – they may put you in touch with My Bryrne.
January 25, 2009 at 15:19 #206415Thanx
Now I have to work out how much I’m prepared to pay.
Don’t want to pay more than £100.
Is that about the right figure?
January 25, 2009 at 15:39 #206416Just found this:
January 25, 2009 at 16:14 #206425Thankyou again.
People are being very obliging and helpful this morning.
I’ll delay writing to Mr Byrne until after I’ve got a response back from the belligerant email I just sent the RP.
I tried using the feedback facility on the RP pictures site, but it kept on saying I was time-expired, and that I wasn’t entering the right 4 character security code used to keep out automatic email senders.
Had to send an email direct to the RP instead, as I couldn’t send an email via the pictures site.
Wasted half an hour on it.

January 25, 2009 at 16:42 #206429Mr Wilson,
Thinking laterally for a second, the list of photographers on the http://www.pointtopoint.co.uk includes a few who cover Rules racing – at all levels – as well as the action between the flags. At least one of them is a TRF member also.

January 25, 2009 at 17:54 #206442I think Chris and Jim Bielby are photographers for Newbury – you could try:

They are lovely people and may be able to help.January 26, 2009 at 01:10 #206517No they’re not! I don’t know who they are but they most certainly are not the photographers for Newbury. Their official photographer is Ian Headington.
Get hold of the Directory of the Turf, you will find most photogaphers listed in there. The official photographers of each course are also printed in racecards along with their contact details.
January 26, 2009 at 17:50 #206606Thanks
Tete Rouge
Found some extra photos I didn’t know existed. Brilliant.
January 26, 2009 at 19:16 #206616Well, even if they’re not the ‘official’ photographer, they are there a lot of the racedays at Newbury.

January 29, 2009 at 04:55 #206973There was an amazing shot of Pendil published by the Sporting Life taken at Ascot. He took off outside the wings of a fence in the straight and the shot caught him in mid air. I’m certain Richard Pitman would be able to put you in touch with the photographer. I don’t know who owns the rights to the SL stock library these days but it should be possible to find out.
You could also try racingfotos.com. They can source old images.
I worked as a photographer at the big meetings around that time and clearly remember the Pendil shot, one of the best racing photos ever.
