We live in the age of conspiracy theories:
9-11 did n’t happen, Elvis lives, Americans never landed on the moon. But as the ancients used to say "where there is money, there is also crime".How frequent is this in horse racing ?
The case for conspiracies:
– The numerous cases that have gone to court.
– The numerous tales we have heard. The case against conspiracies:
– It’s the loser’s tale.
– It’s the happy hunting ground of the low life kind of tipster. The British by their nature dislike conspiracy theories. But even in the British isles some weird things have happened in the past.
Conspiracy lovers invariably fail tearfully when they try to predict the outcome of a race or other sporting event on the basis of a conspiracy theory.
But to explain what have happened when it has happened they have the explanation ready almost instantaneously.
This is natural and it is not meant to discredit them, en masse.
For instance you can say "JFK was assassinated because such and such were his enemies and wanted him dead". But can one, could one, say in November 1963 "JFK is going to be assassinated in Dallas-Texas" ?It is unfortunate that many horse racing authorities turn a blind eye or are selective regarding who they punish.
In addition horse racing suffers from the absence of a strong international authority (such as FIFA – UEFA in football).February 21, 2011 at 13:25 #341568Did anyone know beforehand you ask?
Well, William Hill started paying out on who was responsible for the Dallas shooting on the morning of November 22nd at 9am UK Time.
JFK was shot at 12.30pm Dallas time (teatime in the UK)on November 22nd.
You do the math.

I was 5 years old.
I recall the radio news flash early evening.22/11/1963, 12.30 pm central standard time.
That’s late afternoon in UK.9am is in the morning. Do you mean
pm
?
Took some hours to chase Oswald and apprehend him and in the process Oswald shot dead a policeman.February 21, 2011 at 13:41 #341573But can one, could one, say in November 1963 "JFK is going to be assassinated in Dallas-Texas" ?
Paddy Power laid plenty of the 500/1 they offered about Maggie Simpson taking out Monty Burns a few years back.
Clearly
someone
knew.
February 21, 2011 at 15:04 #341587If you remember Mr Burns was certified dead on arrival at the County Hospital, but they took him to a better private hospital where his condition was described as "comfortable".
Did they pay out on the first result, or were bets voided under rule 38b??
February 21, 2011 at 15:24 #341589They paid out. Twenty large to a group of students at Maynooth College. Unbeknown to Powers the episode was shown in the States a week earlier than Europe. Maggie pulling the trigger was a 500/1 certainty.
February 21, 2011 at 16:00 #341591I got gubbed at 1.01 in running on Waylan Smithers after his inital arrest.
Sky One was about 3 seconds behind with their "live" feed, and all those in the know with Sky One Plus were ahead of the game. There was a Betfair cafe just outside Springfield that made a killing apparently.
February 22, 2011 at 00:43 #341655(IMO) Most conspiracy theories within racing / betting are thought up by punters who want to believe the game is bent. Because then they can blame others (not themselves) for backing the wrong horses.

We all know some such punters.
But what you say is yet another aphorism.
The truth is they are usually low class and they usually get it wrong.Conspiracy theories do not always involve criminal activity.
Those who follow jockey bookings are also conspiracy theorists after a fashion. - AuthorPosts
