UK racing seems to me to be very samey – there’s not a heck of a lot of variation, there’s the odd undulating track but the hurdles are all the same, the ‘chase fences are fairly similar and the flat 5f are mainly straight, AW is round a bend at times.
I’ve been racing in France a fair bit in recent years – primarily Auteuil and Enghien and really enjoy those tracks along with the XC course at Cheltenham, so taking my second trip to Dieppe (first to see a XC race) on 19th July for the Grand Cross De Dieppe (hoping it’s more Grand than the equivalent steeplechase I saw last September).
The same price to go to Dieppe races – including all costs as it is to somewhere like Sandown (from Brighton) which would be around £12 on the train plus £20 entry compared to £30 return on the ferry and 5 Euro’s entry. Great viewing and a beautiful course too if anyone gets the chance to go I’d seriously advise going, gorgeous stand and old stables

Oh and if anyone’s going let me know as long ferry journeys get boring after a while

Why more southern-based trainers don’t run their horses at northern France’s many courses is beyond me.
And owners too – there are almost none who have their horses trained there either.
They seem to be quite prepared to have horses trained near the south coast and running for peanuts, when they could race against similar competition in Normandy for several times the prize money. Beats me.
