    Evening folks,

I havent posted for some time due to work and family commitments but I wondered whether there was an existing ‘Topic’ containing racecourse travel?

Reason being I am hoping to get from the UK to visit some more courses in Ireland (already done most of the ‘big’ tracks), France (I’ve managed Longchamp and Chantilly but keen to visit Deauville etc.) and Germany but before looking into it solo, I was enquirying as to whether someone else has kindly pulled together a helpful guide with the closest train, airport, bus route etc.?

Not to worry if not, as I will just find the time to Googlemap it :-)

Have you considered Pardubice in the Czech Republic? They have a meeting early November featuring the ”Czech National”. Its a two hour drive from Prague and the roads are decent.

Another Id recommend is a night meeting at Happy Valley in HK, easy city to navigate and can be tied into a few days in Macau then a Sunday afternoon meeting at Sha Tin on the way back.

I did visit Busan in South Korea, but that was difficult to do without a translator (for betting purposes).

Dusseldorf in Germany is easy enough to get to many daily flights etc, but the track is away from the city.

But a great idea to have a travel guide forum.

Never looked at a travel guide of any sort in my life, even make a point of never telling anyone where I’m going to avoid unsolicited “advice” on where “you should go while there” as for me it’s about exploring places for myself.

But then I’m an infantile Walter Mitty who thinks he’s Harry Palmer in “Funeral In Berlin” if I ever so much as set foot on continental soil.

Normal, well-adjusted, people tend to like travel guides as they at least give them an initial steer so it’s a great idea to have a racing one here at TRF.

There’s a Day At The Races thread in The Lounge, but this sounds like something more formal and in depth.

Thanks for coming back so quickly.

For the avoidance of doubt, I am certainly not referencing a travel guide, merely list of the closest port, airport, train station.

There is nothing worse than follow people in as, like you Ian, I like to explore for myself.

For example Saint-Gatien airport is the closest to Deauville Racecourse but I assume its a local airport, as seemingly there are no flights from the UK. I therefore assume its a flight/train into Paris or boat from Dover.

That was more so what I meant re Racecouese Travel but suspect I will just need to find time to review on my own :-)

Clints, there was a separate forum for racecourse guides on here when I started reading TRF, I’m almost certain of it, as I used it on one or two occasions. I apologise if I’m getting my forums mixed up, and it wasn’t in here and I send you on a wild goose chase

It might be worth messaging admin about it

    The racecourse guides are here:

I can advise about the tracks I have visited in Ireland. Are there any you particularly want to know about?

We are heading out to Baden-Baden for a week covering 3 days racing Wednesday 30th August, Saturday September 2nd and Sunday September 3rd, part of the ‘Grosse Woche’ Meeting culminating in the Grosser Preis Von Baden on the last day. It’s a much delayed 60th birthday treat for me which was due in 2020 and nice for me that the main race takes place on my birthday this year.

Nearest airport is Karlsruhe, but flights more regularly to Frankfurt from Edinburgh (and presumably other British airports). Then it’s train from Frankfurt airport station to Baden-Baden which takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes, the odd thorugh service but otherwise change at Frankfirt Hbf or Mannheim Hbf depending on the service. Bus service 218 goes from Baden-Baden Station to the course at Iffezheim.

We are staying at the Hotel Am Sophienpark, a 4 star hotel in the centre of Baden-Baden.

Depending on where you are based in the UK, Newhaven – Dieppe ferry might be a better option for Deauville. Obviously the crossing is longer but there’s less driving the other end and less scope for interminable delays (especially if you are going by coach :negative: )

Thanks for everyone’s kind input, I always had faith in TRF elite!

I have visited thr vast majority of UK tracks and am hoping to venture into Europe a bit more to see some decent group 1s. France and Germany appear a good starting place and I will look to set some time aside over the BH break to investigate further.

My initial query was merely to establish whether there was such a racecourse travel list (should have specified away from thr UK – my bad!) but perhaps a good idea to set one up, should there be other thrillseekers out there amongst us.

I have managed a few tracks in Ireland, France and the dizzy heights of Meydan but hoping to cross a few more off if possible and assuming the travel is easy enough.

Anyway, apologies if my initial message was a bit vague and I think I just need to put time aside to take a proper look into future venues.

Have a good day everyone :yahoo:

Sometimes the vaguest messages result in the most interesting threads.

I often think misunderstandings in intention and tone are the driving (and frequently hilarious) force in internet forum debate.

I’ve enjoyed reading this thread – but I’m still not telling anyone where I’m going racing next!

I’ll figure it all out for myself, cheers, everyone, so you can all stick your unsolicited “advice” where the Sun don’t shine!
